Harry Reid Spoke the Truth; Can We? -- Politics Daily. Woman Up Editor Below is a guest post from journalist Lynne Adrine, formerly a senior producer with ABC News, on Judy Howard Ellis' and Mary Curtis' fine takes on the Harry Reid flap. Apart from the predictable political opportunism practiced by Liz Cheney and Michael "Honest Injun" Steele, I've been fascinated at what this all reveals about some white Americans' continuing discomfort on the topic of race. When Reid said voters were ready for someone like Barack Obama -- someone "light-skinned" who spoke with "no Negro dialect" -- Reid told the absolute truth. Some voters were comforted by Obama's appearance and his speech. He is well-spoken and articulate, but not in the cadence of a Jesse Jackson.
They could live with him as president. I'd bet you won't find a lot of black folks who are shocked by what Reid said. And one personal observation, in reference to Reid's comment that Obama avoids "Negro dialect," except when he chooses to: Not in their house. Huffington Post News Twitter Hacked By Foul-Mouthed Conservatives (UPDATE) | Online. Ah, this never gets old, does it? It appears that Huffington Post RSS-style feed of links through Twitter — located @HuffPostNews — has been hacked by dirty-talking, self-proclaimed conservatives. The attack began about 1 hour ago with a crude attack on Keith Olbermann. Other targets include Barack Obama, Rachel Maddow and Ed Schultz. In other words, no surprises. Who knows how much longer the online 140-character mutiny will last, but for posterity, here’s a screenshot: UPDATE: Interestingly, The Huffington Post is now saying the account was a fake that someone else had set up and was using.

Zdravka Todorova: Feminomics: Why Gender Matters in Macroeconomics, as in Real Life. From an economic standpoint, will 2010 be the year of the woman? As part of the Roosevelt Institute's ongoing 'Feminomics' series, running on the New Deal 2.0 blog, I was asked to reflect on women's changing roles in the economy.
Here's my take on why macroeconomists must consider the role of gender in policy-making. When most economists talk abut "economic agents," they are conjuring up bodiless, genderless automatons who naturally have no biological predecessors, do not carry babies, do not give birth, and do not face questions of physical survival and human development. So it is easy for them to look at double-digit unemployment rates and deflationary pressures on wages and benefits simply as market phenomena while ignoring that such things actually threaten the physical survival of families. Yet, we hear constantly about "the future of our children" being jeopardized by growing federal deficits and "unsustainable" government debt.

New groups join climate lobby fray - The next round of the battle over climate change policy on Capitol Hill will involve more than the usual suspects — way more. Watch soup makers face off against steel companies. Witness the folks who pump gas from the ground fight back against those who dig up rock. And watch the venture capitalists who have money riding on new technology try to gain advantage in a game that so far has been deftly controlled by the old machine.
An analysis of the latest federal records by the Center for Public Integrity shows that the overall number of businesses and groups lobbying on climate legislation has essentially held steady at about 1,160, thanks in part to a variety of interests that have left the fray. The amount of money involved quite likely rose as well. Campbell Soup and Kellogg Take the concerns raised by the world’s largest maker of soup, Camden, N.J. Everything you ever wanted to know about anarchism. This classic statement of anarchism was written by a diverse group of anarchists in Cardiff around 1980 and it is an interesting historical record of the optimism of mainstream anarchist thought at that time. There is probably more rubbish talked about anarchism than any other political idea. Actually, it has nothing to do with a belief in chaos, death and destruction. Anarchists do not normally carry bombs, nor do they ascribe any virtue to beating up old ladies. It is no accident that the sinister image of the mad anarchist is so accepted. The State, the press and all the assorted authoritarian types, use every means at their disposal to present anarchy as an unthinkable state of carnage and chaos.
We can expect little else from power-mongers who would have no power to monger if we had our way. The alleged necessity of authority is so firmly planted in the average mind that anarchy, which means simply 'no government' is almost unthinkable to most people. But people need to work. How A Bone Disease Grew To Fit The Prescription. Katie Benghauser, 57, has been diagnosed with osteopenia and takes Fosamax as treatment to prevent osteoporosis. Coburn Dukehart/NPR hide caption toggle caption Coburn Dukehart/NPR Katie Benghauser had no concept of all the forces that combined to bring the box of pills to the bottom shelf of her medicine cabinet.
All she knew was that three years ago she went in for a routine checkup and her doctor told her it was time for her to take a test. Not that there was anything in particular about Benghauser that suggested sickness. Still, because Benghauser was thin, white, female, in her 50s and had a sister who had some bone problems, she says the doctor told her that she was concerned.
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become thinner, more porous and break more easily. Osteopenia Vs. Osteopenia is different from osteoporosis. The filibuster: let's talk about it - James Fallows. In a discussion with Guy Raz this afternoon on Weekend All Things Considered, after he evoked a chagrining personal admission*, we touched on a point that I think needs to be elevated from a background/insider's issue to absolutely first-tier consideration in mainstream political discourse. It has to do with the distorting and destructive effect of the Senate's modern "60 votes to get anything done" system of operation. I say "modern" because, contrary to the tone of most day-by-day political reportage, this is not some timeless feature of American constitutional design.
In newspaper accounts, you read things like this -- the second paragraph of an (otherwise very good) NYT story today on the struggles over health care reform: Of course, the number of votes the Democrats need to pass their bill is a simple majority -- 51 votes at most. ("At most" because a 50-50 tie would be broken by the Vice President, who of course is now a Democrat.) "That topic is supermajority rule in the U.S. How health lobbyists influenced reform bill -- chicagotribune.com. December 20, 2009|By Andrew Zajac, Tribune Newspapers and Tribune Newspapers' Tom Hamburger and Joe Markman contributed to this report. WASHINGTON — David Nexon had a big problem. An early version of national health care legislation contained a $40 billion tax aimed squarely at members of the medical device trade association he represents. Nexon, a former adviser to the late Massachusetts Sen.
Ted Kennedy, went to work. When Senate Democrats unveiled their bill in mid-November, Nexon's handiwork was evident. Nexon's team is an illustration of how deeply the health care industry has embedded itself on Capitol Hill, using former aides of lawmakers and ex-lawmakers themselves. An analysis of public documents by Northwestern University's Medill News Service in partnership with the Tribune Newspapers Washington Bureau and the Center for Responsive Politics found a revolving door between Capitol Hill staffers and lobbying jobs for companies with a stake in health care legislation. FOX News Whistle blowers. UNBELIEVABLE!!! US drones hacked by Iraqi insurgents | World news. Insurgents in Iraq used software such as Skygrabber to hack into American drones. Photograph: Ethan Miller/Getty One of America's most sophisticated weapons in the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the unmanned drone, has been successfully penetrated by insurgents using software available on the internet for $26 (£16).
Insurgents in Iraq intercepted live video feeds from the drones being relayed back to a US controller and revealing potential targets. A US official said the flaw was identified and fixed in the past 12 months. The problem only came to light after the US found many hours' worth of videotaped recordings on militant laptops late last year and earlier this year. The insurgents used software programmes such as Skygrabber, developed by a Russian company and originally intended to download music and videos from the internet. The drones have become one of the most important parts of the US armoury.
The 50-Vote Senate | The American Prospect. The Anatomy of The Twitter Attack: Part II. During and after Twittergate, when a hacker broke into a few hosted email accounts and obtained a number of internal documents, I had an opportunity to spend hours speaking to the actual attacker and document how he carried out the attack. The article was called The Anatomy of The Twitter Attack, and today we unfortunately find ourselves with a sequel to that post as the Twitter DNS servers were compromised last night and the site was redirected to a defacement page. Unlike last time, on this occasion I have not had the benefit of speaking directly to the attackers, but have spoken to a number of people within the underground security scene familiar with matters and have constructed other parts of the story from public sources.
The incident last night was perpetrated by a group called the Iranian Cyber Army – and we have been told that this group is working with the Iranian government. By Emmanuel Goldstein (The 'Book within a Book' from George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four) Chapter 1 - Ignorance is StrengthChapter 2 - Freedom is SlaveryChapter 3 - War is Peace Chapter I Ignorance is Strength Throughout recorded time, and probably since the end of the Neolithic Age, there have been three kinds of people in the world, the High, the Middle, and the Low.
The aims of these three groups are entirely irreconcilable. By the late nineteenth century the recurrence of this pattern had become obvious to many observers. The new doctrines arose partly because of the accumulation of historical knowledge, and the growth of the historical sense, which had hardly existed before the nineteenth century. It was only after a decade of national wars, civil wars, revolutions, and counter-revolutions in all parts of the world that Ingsoc and its rivals emerged as fully worked-out political theories.
