Open Camera Controller Introduction. Most cameras are designed for a typical user who just takes vacation photos, not the specialized needs of those interested in the process of photography.
Hardcore users like us need more than the final picture spit out as four-by-six snapshots to be emailed to family and friends. Rick from EdenFX uses Open Camera Control to turbocharge his Mark 5D II on set. How does the Open Camera Controller compare? In the time since we created the OCC, there have been many attempts to add new camera abilities with hacks or attachments, each with advantages and drawbacks. We have tried them all. CHDK, for example, is a firmware mod for Canon cameras that adds many new features, but only to a limited selection of consumer-grade camera models. Hopefully all of these limitations might be overcome by future releases, and with any luck the developers are paying attention to what’s going on here and listening to our needs.
Until then, we present the OCC. There are two main components to this system. Dslrdashboard - Application for controlling DSLR camera with Android device over USB connection. DslrDashboard is an Android application for tethering/controlling your Nikon or Canon DSLR camera connected with USB/wireless(WU-1a/1b or PTP/IP) to your Android device or through DslrDashboardServer running on OpenWrt router or your Linux device.
To be able to use the application with your USB connected DSLR you will need an Android device that supports the USB host function and an USB OTG adapter that you can buy cheap on internet or build it yourself. NOTE: USB support was added in Android 3.0 version first and later back-ported to some of the 2.4 devices but unfortunately not all device maker include it and on some devices you need an external power source. Beginning with DslrDashboard V0.30.1 only Android 4.0 (ICS) and up devices are supported. You can find previous versions in the Downloads section that work with Android devices prior to 4.0 (ICS).
