Socratic Seminar is a great way to coach students in vital 21st century skills—especially critical thinking and speaking and listening skills. Seminars are most effective when facilitators establish some rules for respectful dialogue and ask students to set goals. Before the Seminar: Explain the Rules First, set up your classroom for a seminar. To encourage a collaborative dialogue, arrange students’ seats in a circle. Students don’t need to raise their hands to talk.

Setting Goals for the Seminar Process Group goals Before the seminar, ask the student to choose a group goal, such as: Focus on ideas and values in the text.Keep an open mind.Invite everyone to share their ideas.Use others’ names.Remember that one person speaks at a time. The results of a differentiated learning activity should, to the greatest extent possible, be shared with a real and appropriate audience.

Individuals with expertise in, or closely related to, the subject of the student’s product are authentic audiences. Regardless of the student’s age, an authentic audience may involve members of the scientific community, the city council, a government agency, the arts community, etc. For example, reports of student research can be submitted for review and publication in scientific journals. Or the audience may be parents of other students in the school, current and retired members of professional communities with expertise in the content area. Involving assessors from professional communities “raises the bar” and indicates to students that their efforts are taken seriously and have value beyond the classroom.
