I built this software for myself, and then it turned out a million people wanted it exactly how I originally envisioned it. After hiring a few people, being the CEO became a lot easier, and I was able to focus on high-level strategic plans instead of fighting fires. I wish we had spent less time talking to prospective customers before designing interfaces and writing code. The decision of whether to form an LLC, S-Corp, or C-Corp made a significant difference in my startup’s success. Selling the company was an easy decision, and everyone in the company was on the same page. We were so good at acting that our first few customers never knew we were a new company with no employees and buggy software.

Thanks to a software patent we filed, we never had a serious competitor. Our most effective marketing campaigns were the ones filled with buzzwords and non-specific claims. My lack of an MBA degree made building a company from scratch harder for me than for others. Let’s collect more in the comments!

Fred's Five Rules for Product/Market Fit. Going to Raise VC? Here’s a Primer on Process, People & Powerpoint Deck. If you want a very quick primer on all the stuff nobody ever tells you about raising venture capital check out this video where Mark Jeffrey & I break it down on This Week in VC.

A summary of what we discussed is below: Not 100% in order of the video, but close. All of this is covered in more detail on the TWiVC video above (and much of it is covered in text on this blog on the “Raising VC” tab) 1. Will a VC sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement)? No. If they did they would be in constant violation because VCs often see 3-4+ companies in every market that they operation. 2. Meet with one person from the firm – partner or associate. 3. 1 or more can attend first meeting depending on strength of your team. 4. 5. 6.

Bio of top 3 people in the company. You can vary from this but these are the key themes are the ones you need to cover. The “exit” slide is controversial but as I discuss in the video – necessary no matter what anybody else tells you. Understanding How The Innovator’s Dilemma Affects You. One of the most influential books of my career is The Innovator’s Dilemma by Clay Christensen. I cannot recommend it enough for people in the technology or media sectors. Many people bandy about the definitions of “disruptive technology” or “the innovator’s dilemma” without ever having read the book and almost universally misunderstand the concepts. Reading it felt like read a university book for an economics class and no wonder since he’s a professor at Harvard Business School. The thesis of the book is that incumbents in markets – especially large and well entrenched markets – seldom survive fundamental technology changes in their industries. Most were on paper and video; 20 were invited to pitch in person. Interesting patterns emerged: Everyone makes the same classes of error. Those who avoided just one of those errors stood out in the crowd. These are problems with the business concept or the founder’s attitude, not specific to raising angel money. You’re probably making a lot of these errors too. Not that I blame you! So for the next few weeks I’m doing a series on these mistakes and what to do about them.

Here’s the list: Invalid competitive advantages “Superior SEO” and “unique features” are not competitive advantages.Lacking an unfair advantage You need one killer advantage that no one on Earth can beat you on.
