Business Source: Computer Software Design. Market size. India, China, and the Map to Two Billion Connected Devices Posted by Mary Ellen Gordon, PhD on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 Flurry measured a 47% increase in active smartphones and tablets in the United States between April of 2012 and April of 2013. While that number sounds impressive, it actually puts the U.S. in the bottom 5% of countries for connected device growth in the past year. Worldwide, growth of these devices is exploding. To be in the top 5% of countries for growth over the past year, a country’s number of active connected devices needed to more than triple. There are currently more than one billion active smartphones and tablets globally, and based on current growth rates we expect to reach two billion in 2014. In this report we discuss which countries are growing fastest, and the implications for the mobile ecosystem and for society more generally.

Huge Potential for Future Growth Let’s start by considering China and the U.S. Canada and India provide an even more dramatic comparison. The mobile app economy is exploding (so, what else is new?) | GamesBeat. SAN FRANCISCO – Simon Khalaf is a mobile believer. The Flurry chief executive built a case for the explosion in mobile devices and apps in a talk Thursday at the Flurry Source 13 conference in San Francisco.

If your company hasn’t gotten on board the mobile bandwagon, then you’re pretty late, Khalaf argued. The U.S. still leads in iOS and Android devices with 181 million units, compared to 167 million in China, 35 million in the United Kingdom, and 28 million in Japan. While still dominated by America, mobile is a global phenomenon, Khalaf said. China grew 293 percent in iOS and Android device activations in the last year. Vietnam grew 269 percent, and Colombia grew 260 percent. “You go to any airport and any country,” Khalaf said. In terms of minutes of use per day, mobile app consumption in the U.S. has reach 127 minutes, compared to 168 minutes for TV and 70 minutes for web browsing.

“These apps are challenging television,” Khalaf said. 2012 Mobile Growth Statistics  We all know that the growth of the mobile market is huge throughout the globe and constantly reshaping how we interact in our everyday lives. U.S. Losing Ground In Mobile App Market. If mobile apps are the post-PC era’s software industry, the U.S. may be losing its edge. According to new findings mobile analytics firm Flurry released this morning, the U.S. isn’t leading in the creation of mobile applications, having slipped from 45 percent of worldwide app market share in 2011, to 36 percent in 2013, in terms of where apps are being built.

Positioned against what the software industry looked like in 2008, where U.S. businesses produced around 68 percent of software units sold, it’s clear that the mobile app industry is one that’s becoming truly global in nature. The U.S. app market does have something going for it, however – the apps it puts out are more engaging, and include more users, the report also found. When weighing apps by total time, taking into account user numbers and engagement, the U.S. still leads, though its percentage here as well has dropped from 75 percent to 70 percent from 2011 to 2013. And more than a billion apps are being downloaded every single day.

Many of these apps are either free or come at a very minimal cost, making them available to the masses. However, most of these apps are built by large corporations who can afford to hire app developers and spend a great deal of time and money developing them. Until recently the smaller players, such as small and medium businesses, charitable organizations, indie musicians, and even individuals, could not break into the app creation field; it was simply too time and cost prohibitive to create an app. The thousands of dollars and months of development work posed a huge barrier to entry into the world of apps. The good news is that there is a paradigm shift happening right before our very eyes.
