Five Ways to Print Your Own 3-D Objects [Slide Show]: Scientific
What it does: Hod Lipson's grand plan was to make a robot that could build copies of itself. What the Cornell University roboticist ended up with was something more modest. In Lipson's Model 1, a syringe ejects epoxy or another gooey material onto a platform in paper-thin layers.Cambridge University Engineering Department - Qi Pan
Generating 3D models of real world objects is a common task during development of any augmented reality application. This paper describes how ProFORMA (Probabilistic Feature-based On-line Rapid Model Acquisition), a rapid reconstruction system, has been designed to simplify and speed up this task. ProFORMA uses a fixed video camera to allow on-line reconstruction of objects held in a user's hand. Partial models are generated very quickly and displayed instantly, allowing the user to plan how to manipulate the object's pose in order to generate additional views for reconstruction. We demonstrate how augmented reality can be used to assist the user in view planning, guiding the user to collect new keyframes from desirable views in order to complete and refine the model. By now, you've probably seen Björk's stunning 3-D video for "Wanderlust" ...in 2-D. If you want to view the Icelandic singer's psilocybin-friendly vision as she intended, you'll want to watch it in stereoscopic 3-D, the same depth-enhancing technique — based on linear polarization — that's used in 3-D IMAX theaters. And who better to show you how than the directorial duo behind the video, Sean Hellfritsch and Isaiah Saxon of Encyclopedia Pictura. They DIY'd their own 3-D viewing system, dubbed the Vizard. "We shot 'Wanderlust' with the small screen in mind," says Hellfritsch, who designed the contraption. The Vizard is currently on sale at New York's Deitch Projects gallery for $15,000 (Björk video included), but you can cobble together your own for $300.
