Maslow and Motherboards: Technology Planning

I just can’t get the teachers excited about using technology as a part of their instructional units. They say the stuff never works at the critical time. Those technicians! They have the computers so locked up, the kids can’t do anything.Seems like we are always short of powerful computers for students, but the folks at the district office always seem to have new machines.Another gradebook program to learn!

Why can’t the district just pick one and stay with it? Such questions often stem from a lack of having a holistic view of technology use in schools. When I came into my job as technology “supervisor” in the Mankato Public Schools in 1991, my department and I focused almost exclusively on the teaching and learning applications for our few Apple IIs in the district. Maslow and motherboards Schools are also businesses. Helpful Links from VILS 2-10-15 virtual conference - Google Docs.

Educational Leadership:Technology-Rich Learning:Our Brains Extended

A New Way of Thinking The fact that many adults would dispute this statement illustrates how few understand the extent to which the world has changed in our kids' lifetimes, and the role technology now plays. Let me clarify: Technology isn't about new "stuff. " It's not about laptops, iPads, cell phones, or the software kids use. It's not about different ways to do what we do now. Technology, rather, is an extension of our brains; it's a new way of thinking.

Humans have always depended on external mind enhancements (writing, for example). So when young people say, "When I lose my cell phone, I lose half my brain," they mean it literally. Rethinking the Curriculum Wise integration of our evolving and powerful technology demands that we rethink our curriculum.

Department of Education Office of Civil Rights recently released a Dear Colleague Letter on Resource Equity. Excerpts from the letter related to technology are provided below. OCR Dear Colleague Letter: Resource Equity This letter calls attention to disparities that persist in access to educational resources so that districts may address disparities and comply with the legal obligation to provide students with equal access to these resources without regard to race, color, or national origin. The Problem of Unequal Access to Educational Resources Research confirms what we know intuitively — high-quality schools can make a dramatic difference in children’s lives, closing achievement gaps and providing students with the opportunity to succeed in college and their chosen careers.
