Le cinéma de Jacquot, très proche ici du meilleur Sautet, retrouve toute sa chair. Avec Pas de scandale, Benoît Jacquot trouve son point d’équilibre et livre enfin le meilleur de son versant classique, comme La Fille seule était son grand film expérimental, l’aboutissement éclatant de recherches formelles longtemps trop glaciaires. Sur un embryon de roman de Jérôme Beaujour, coauteur du scénario et meilleur complice de Jacquot, Pas de scandale commence par poser un théorème fictionnel qui laisse présager le pire : un grand patron (Luchini) sort de prison après avoir purgé quatre mois pour “abus de biens sociaux”, retrouve sa vie bourgeoise dans le xvième arrondissement, sa femme qu’il vouvoie (Huppert) et son frère (Lindon), journaliste-vedette à la télévision.
Impossible de ne pas penser à Tapie et PPDA, lourd handicap de départ, risque de ridicule achevé.

Fully embracing the narcissism and misplaced priorities of its four hopelessly inseparable characters, Anne Fontaine’s film about two lifelong friends who fall for each other’s sons is all vapidly beautiful surface, an impeccably tasteful picture about some awfully tasteless decisions. Typically classy performances by Naomi Watts and Robin Wright lend the material more dignity and interest than it warrants, spelling lucrative inroads with distaff audiences in arthouse play.
