'New York Times' Creating Digital Longform Magazine. In a note to colleagues Friday, Jill Abramson, executive editor of the The New York Times, announced that the paper is developing a new, longform digital magazine, under the direction of former national editor Sam Sifton.

Abramson describes the magazine as "an immersive digital magazine experience, a lean back read that will include new, multimedia narratives in the tradition of 'Snow Fall' and last weekend’s compelling account of the Arizona fire, as well as some of the best reads published during the previous week. " She says the magazine would be a "need to read," one different from the Times's culture-focused Sunday magazine. Abramson did say when the title would be released, nor name anyone else working on the project. It's also not yet known if it will be available to current subscribers or as a separate product.

Thus far, publishers have had little success with digital-only magazine launches.
