GPS Maps. This is a common question from people who own programs like National Geographic TOPO! Or Maptech Terrain Navigator. The short answer is no. But let's take a minute to learn why not and also look at what kind of maps you can place on your GPS. The programs mentioned above are raster-based. Raster maps are simply image files; such programs rely on scanned USGS maps. The maps you can use on your GPS screen, such as Garmin MapSource products, or Magellan MapSend, are different. To construct a map of contour lines, the software must establish only the lines, not the background.

You cannot put raster maps on a GPS screen, but you can purchase vector maps or create your own for your GPS. GPS Mapping: Make Your Own Maps is available now! Accessory: microSD data card, City Navigator NT, North America. Gps tracklog. Worldwide BaseMap for free from Garmin. Hi Guys, Yes, the basemap is the lowest level of map detail. The basemaps will ONLY be used if you enter into an area where there isn't any detailed map coverage.

As gpspassion mentioned, the basemaps are indeed routable (although only on major interstates, etc.). They were once useful when GPS units were smaller and you could only load in map regions/chunks for your starting and destination areas. When you were in-between those areas, you simply relied upon the base map to get you where you were going. As for how I found out what version basemap the nĂ¼vi has, I believe that it tells you in the About screen. As for the World-Wide basemap... GPS TrackMaker. Using GPSMapEdit.

I have heard alot of good preliminary stuff about the X-models, but I am disapointed in the loss of the ALARM CLOCK, that I use on my Map60C. Much of what I would use a Map60Cx for would be Fitness Exercise, and accurate plotting of Trails, for download to the PC. I have been thinking of getting either an Explorist 500, Explorist XL, Map76Cx, or Map60Cx. I cannot do Physical Fitness Exercise with a Magellan, except a hike, and I cannot do Data Storage of FILES on a handheld Garmin GPS. I use a GPS mainly for Fitness, but also mapping and autorouting. As an electronic file cabinate, for large storage of POI, Maps, and Tracklogs, there is no better GPS, than an Explorist GPS like a 500 or XL, but my use is in Physical Fitness, and no other GPS covers this plus autorouting, than my trusty Map60C GPS.

Im going to keep the Map60C, that fits well in the hand while I'm Jogging, and just use TopoFusion for all my Exercising needs. . - Geoff Edit: misspelling.
