Study: The Objectification of Women Is a Real, Measurable Phenomenon - Hans Villarica

PROBLEM: Women's bare bodies are on display in billboards, movie posters, and many other kinds of ads. Though plenty of studies have looked at the ramifications of this pervasive sexual objectification, it's unclear if we see near-naked people as human beings or if we really do view them as mere objects.

METHODOLOGY: Researchers led by Philippe Bernard presented participants pictures of men and women in sexualized poses, wearing a swimsuit or underwear, one by one on a computer screen. Since pictures of people present a recognition problem when they're turned upside down, but images of objects don't have that problem, some of the photos were presented right side up and others upside down. RESULTS: The male and female subjects matched the photos similarly.

CONCLUSION: People objectify women in sexualized photos, but not men. Love around the world. These Little Girls Are Asking The Most Devastating Question I Can Imagine. While promoting the Ducati 1199 Panigale bike, they decided to have a hilarious ad campaign run alongside their regular one. The second campaign features men trying their best to imitate female models by striking some alluring poses and strutting their stuff in front of the candy-red motorcycle. The “Hot Mess” motorcycle shoot features the CorsaCrew recreating Lewallen’s sexy moves while posing alongside one sizzling red Ducati motorcycle. Men Pose As Motorcycle Models. The depths of societies ingrained sexism -- and the degree to which successful women understand it is a fact of life that requires constant vigalance and adjustment -- never ceases to amaze and trouble me.

Powerful Men Talk More, Powerful Women Don't Because It Damages Their Likeability, Power, and Effectiveness

A new study in the Administrative Science Quarterly (Volume 56, pages 622-641) by Yale faculty member Victoria L. Brescoll presents a trio of studies that examine gender, power, and volubility (talking time). The headline above contains the upshot. Here are some details: 1. 2. 3. Pretty disturbing, huh? The question is -- what can be done about this problem? In any event, powerful women are often quite adept at finding ways to press their opinions without increasing their talking time.
