Mountford Architects have completed the contemporary renovation of a 1960s home in Salter Point, Western Australia. From the architect For Ben Mountford of Mountford Architects, this particular project was more of a rebuild than a renovation. The original 1960s home was to be reinvented in a modern, stylish design that flowed effortlessly from front to back, combining all living areas on one level rather than the previous two.The kitchen was to become the central part of this new zone, where the clients would fulfil their love of entertaining and could also choose the covered outdoor spaces at either end of the home. For this luxurious home in Salter Point, one of the most distinctive characteristics is the open gabled roof with large stone infill walls to delineate formal and informal living areas.Externally, the cantilevers in the roof at the front and back of the home were achieved with a pre-tensioned ridge beam.

When asked to draw a house, most children produce the simple geometry of a triangle-topped square, perhaps complete with a rectangular roof. Residential architecture has often gone far beyond this archetypal structure, with dwellings that feature walls of glass, sweeping curves, or dramatic volumes that can seem more sculptural than livable. Recently, a number of architects have decided to take a simpler design route for the home. Products of youthful imaginings or embodiments of a more adult whimsy, these seven contemporary projects charmingly evoke those childhood house drawings. Australian architect Dane Richardson designed this house in Eagle Bay, Western Australia. From the architect The large open planning of the main living room form the central core of the building; the space was divided into areas with clear functions. The volume of this space was divided by a large fire place and level changes. This achieved a connection with others in the space but enabled the different activities to seem slightly separate which has proved very beneficial when the house is at capacity. The north facing terrace with its built in “fire box” is the focus of all outside entertaining.

The open “fire box” provides a fantastic place to sit and star gaze in the evening. The planning divides the building into three wings. Children’s bedrooms, guest room, bathroom and games/tv room to the western side. Design: Dane Design Australia. Cycle House by Chadbourne + Doss Architects. Chadbourne + Doss Architects have recently completed a house for two people and 18 bicycles in Seattle, Washington. This new 2,400 square foot residence is located at the intersection of two major bike routes in the Mount Baker neighborhood of Seattle. The lot is narrow, but has lake and mountain views to the east. We sought to craft an efficient custom residence that uniquely represents the Owners’ personality and lifestyle.Martin and Shelley, a very active couple, wanted a home that would not only have storage and maintenance space for their 18 bicycles, but would also facilitate entertaining, provide cozy nooks for reading and relaxing, and maintain a strong connection to the exterior. They were very engaged in our design process, even providing us with scent vials meant to evoke sensibilities they wished to experience in their home- cool ocean, woody comfort, industrial, and balanced quiet/calm.

Vance Lane Residence by Chioco Design. Chioco Design with the help of Miars Construction, completed this family home in West Austin, Texas. Project description Located in West Austin this 3700 square foot residence is home to a family of four. The design consists of interlocking linear, rectangular forms using local gray Leuders limestone, white integral color stucco, Douglas Fir siding, steel and glass. The composition, relative to the gently sloping site, creates opportunities to experience outdoor living spaces that are direct extensions of the interior rooms. The interior has an edited palette of materials to include Walnut floor, vertical grain White Oak paneling and cabinetry, Limestone tile and steel. The Lujan House by Robert M. Gurney. Architect Robert M. Gurney designed the Lujan house in Ocean View, Delaware.

Project description Modest houses on small lots comprise the Quillen’s Point neighborhood, adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay in Ocean View, Delaware. An eclectic mix of houses, gravel roads ending at the bay and wooded lots provide a nostalgic, informal setting for this new house. The project site is near the end of Burbage Lane, the second lot from the bay with expectations that the adjacent waterfront lot will eventually be developed. In an effort to integrate living spaces with the outdoors while maintaining privacy from Burbage Lane and neighboring houses, the scheme is organized around a centrally located garden.

Gary Gladwish Architecture designed the Eagle Ridge residence, located on Orcas Island in Washington State. Project description 54 years ago she visited Orcas Island for the first time and decided that one day she would live there. 40 years passed before she saw it again and purchased a forested piece of land on a hillside populated with madrone trees, firs, beech, thistle, moss and rocks with magnificent views to the west. Throughout her life rocks, nature and landscape played an important role in her artwork. It was this attraction that convinced her that this was the perfect site for her.She requested an open, simple, low maintenance design which works with the site in such a way that her views of the island, forest and ledges were always present within the house.

Conard Romano Architects designed the Washington Park Residence in Seattle, Washington. Project description This Washington Park Residence sits on a bluff overlooking Lake Washington with views of the Eastside and Cascades beyond. The house takes advantage of the site by contrasting mass and transparency to capture broad, unobstructed views while preserving privacy. Thick, thermally insulated concrete walls are layered and modulated on the street side of the house to provide carefully framed views from west facing rooms, add depth and shadow to the facade, and orchestrate the entry sequence through the courtyard to the front door.

Architect: Conard Romano Architects. House in Belo Horizonte by Anastasia Architects. Anastasia Architects designed this house in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Project description The 370 square meters residence distributed in two levels is situated in a manly residential neighborhood in the city of Belo Horizonte – Brazil – on a 450 square meters flat site. The architectural approach seeks to privilege the maximum integration of external and internal areas, mixing up their boundaries, and, then amplifying the feeling of wideness.Due to the reduced size of the site, residual and crossing spaces were practically left out (for example, there is no entrance hall, in behalf of a visual permeability with the entrance garden, achieved through large pivotal doors in the facade). The floor plan is rectangular and compact, stretching till the site’s sidelines.

Architect: Anastasia Architects Photography by Jomar Bragança. Entryway Appeal Can Hinge on a Pivot Door. Hardware is a crucial element in the design of a pivot door. The type of pivot used (offset, center hung, pocket) is a function of the architecture of the home. For example, an offset hung door can be opened 180 degrees, whereas this wouldn't be possible with a center-hung door.

The other hardware element is the closer, which is the bit of hardware that keeps the door from slamming shut after it's been opened. While many closers are fully visible (think of the piston-type closer on a storm door), they are usually concealed so there isn't any ugly box on the door. Because they are concealed, it's important to coordinate the installation of the closer with the surrounding structure. Even with this extra bit of coordination, a pivot door is really the right choice to achieve the big opening that is so much a part of contemporary architectural design. Six Semi-Detached Houses + Isolated House in Rocafort by Antonio Altarriba Comes | KARMATRENDZ. This project, consisting of six semi-detached houses and an isolated one located in Rocafort (Valencia), tries to get homogeneity and order of the independent units creating a whole. Basically, there are three different types of houses: on the one hand, there are two different distributions for the semi-detached houses, and on the other hand the isolated house, which works generating the whole group but keeping its own identity as a single-family house.

The whole group is a combination of different pieces that come together indifferently, getting the suggestive unity of variety that is the pursuit of contemporary architecture. The volumes consist mainly of two elements: the ground floor, which is completely opened to the exterior through its north and south sides and closed by white walls in the east and west façades, and the upper floor, built with natural stone, which lay overhanging from the ground floor with drilling façades depending on the interior needs. via Like this: Like Loading...
