Why India is increasing its UK investments. Image copyright Oli Scarff When it comes to Indian investment in the UK, among the most high profile is Tata Motors' ownership of carmaker Jaguar Land Rover.
Yet this is just the tip of an iceberg when it comes to UK firms owned by Indian businesses. The visit to the UK by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which starts on Thursday, comes at a time when India is emerging as perhaps the strongest player among the so-called Bric nations - Brazil, Russia, India and China. While the Brazilian, Chinese and Russian economies are all showing signs of slowing, India is booming.
Shielded from China's slowdown thanks to its huge domestic market, India's economy is growing at a rate of 7% per year, putting it neck and neck with the Chinese. And some of that Indian growth is finding new markets in the UK. According to a report earlier this year from government department UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), India is now the third-largest source of foreign direct investment into the UK. For the scientific journal, see BioScience. For life sciences generally, see life science. Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or "any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use" (UN Convention on Biological Diversity, Art. 2). Depending on the tools and applications, it often overlaps with the (related) fields of bioengineering, biomedical engineering, etc. For thousands of years, humankind has used biotechnology in agriculture, food production, and medicine. The term is largely believed to have been coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer Károly Ereky.
In the late 20th and early 21st century, biotechnology has expanded to include new and diverse sciences such as genomics, recombinant gene techniques, applied immunology, and development of pharmaceutical therapies and diagnostic tests. Élie Metchnikoff first suggested the possibility of colonizing the gut with beneficial flora in the early 20th century.
Probiotics are microorganisms that are believed to provide health benefits when consumed. The term probiotic is currently used to name ingested microorganisms associated with benefits for humans and animals. The term came into more common use after 1980. The introduction of the concept is generally attributed to Nobel recipient Élie Metchnikoff, who postulated that yogurt-consuming Bulgarian peasants lived longer lives because of this custom. He suggested in 1907 that "the dependence of the intestinal microbes on the food makes it possible to adopt measures to modify the flora in our bodies and to replace the harmful microbes by useful microbes". A significant expansion of the potential market for probiotics has led to higher requirements for scientific substantiation of putative benefits conferred by the microorganisms. Etymology Definition Adhd diet connection. Groundwater in Australia. Groundwater is found in aquifers which are geological formations able to store and transmit water.
The geology of Australia is diverse, therefore the types of aquifers vary, examples include: Alluvial Aquifers Formed of sediments such as gravel, sand and silt deposited by rivers or other running water. Fractured Rocks Fractures and fissures within hard and impermeable rock (such as granite) that are able to store and transmit water. Sedimentary Basins Relatively large areas where thick layers of sedimentary rock (such as sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate) have been deposited over many years. Palaeovalleys Alluvial deposits formed by ancient rivers that are no longer active. National Aquifer Framework: Water Information: Bureau of Meteorology. Crazy paving: Rotterdam to consider trialling plastic roads.
The Netherlands could become the first country in the world where the streets are paved with plastic bottles after Rotterdam city council said it was considering piloting a new type of road surface touted by its creators as a greener alternative to asphalt.
Construction firm VolkerWessels unveiled plans on Friday for a surface made entirely from recycled plastic, which it said required less maintenance than asphalt and could withstand more extreme temperatures of between minus 40C and 80C. Roads could be laid in a matter of weeks rather than months and last about three times as long, it claimed. How laboratory-grown organs will transform our lives. Most babies born in 1900 died before the age of 50; 100 years later life expectancy in the UK now exceeds 80 years, with the number of over-65s expected to double by 2030.

When the taps ran dry in São Paulo neighbourhoods during a drought earlier this year, residents took to storing water in pots and tanks in their homes.
The resultant surge in the mosquito population led to the tripling in dengue fever cases across Brazil. The 500,000 Brazilians who caught the disease – the effects of which range from a fever to death – through mosquito bites in the first three months of the year are but a small fraction of the hundreds of millions infected annually. Graphene light bulb set for shops - BBC News. A light bulb made with graphene - said by its UK developers to be the first commercially viable consumer product using the super-strong carbon - is to go on sale later this year. The dimmable bulb contains a filament-shaped LED coated in graphene. It was designed at Manchester University, where the material was discovered. It is said to cut energy use by 10% and last longer owing to its conductivity. The National Graphene Institute at the university was opened this month.
