Unimaginably tired. It's unclear whether he has been able to sleep at all in the last 72 hours. ("Very, very little," he says.) The whole situation is like some bizarre dream, except he can't be dreaming, because he hasn't slept. "It's all kind of been a blur," Chen says. It turns out he got the two devices to talk to each other the same way a Pebble smartwatch communicates with an iPhone for notifications. He used the Apple Notification Center Service (ANCS), a feature built into iOS 7 and later, that connects via Bluetooth to pass along iPhone notifications to devices like smartwatches. Hands On With Windows 10. TechCrunch went hands-on with Windows 10 to show you the best of the latest build of Microsoft’s new operating system.
To make it extra pure, we put Windows 10 through its paces on a Surface Pro 3. Windows 10 is Microsoft’s effort to build an operating system that can run on any screen size and accept various modes of input depending on where it is deployed. In the video, keep an eye out for the section discussing how the operating system flips between tablet mode and keyboard mode as an example of that work. Cortana, the company’s digital assistant tool, made a noisy entrance into the world of Windows, along with a new Xbox application that caters to the gamer set. If Windows 10 fails to attract developer interest, Microsoft may not be able to make a successful pitch to the current and coming generations of developers.
The platform wars are existential after all. Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 users. Microsoft's Windows 10 event is just getting started, and it sounds like the company is eager to make it as easy and cheap as possible for those running older versions of Windows to upgrade.
Terry Myerson just announced on stage that, for the first year after Windows 10 launches, any device running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the latest version of MIcrosoft's OS — for free. These are Windows 10's new desktop features. Microsoft today lifted the veil on its upcoming Windows 10 operating system, offering a thorough preview of what consumers can expect when the software is released later this year across desktops, smartphones, and tablets.
After a small glimpse back in September revealed numerous changes — a modernized Start Menu, better multitasking with Task View, and UI improvements among them — Microsoft used today's press conference to focus on what Windows 10 will mean for its millions of everyday users. Not everything shown today will be made available to Windows 10 testers immediately.
Joe Belfiore specified that some will roll out over a course of "three, four, or five months. " Leatherman is making the best charm bracelet ever, out of screwdrivers. One of the oldest things I still own, an early gift from my parents, is a blue Leatherman Mini-Tool.
Growing up, I used it constantly for a strange mix of projects: taking apart simple gadgets, measuring fabric for sewing, and peeling (technically) edible bark off trees to practice wilderness survival, among other things. But I also always pined for a much more traditional pre-teen luxury: a charm bracelet. These weren't as different as they seem; they were cute, shiny, modular windows into the world of adulthood. But apparently, if I'd grown up a decade or two later, I could have had both at the same time.
Theverge. Theverge. We just finished a heavily scripted, carefully managed, and completely amazing demonstration of Microsoft's HoloLens technology.
Four demos, actually, each designed to show off a different use case for a headset that projects holograms into real space. August Launches A $50 WiFi Bridge Called August Connect To Open Its Smart Lock To Other Developers. Home automation startup August first came to market with a smart lock that allows users to get inside their homes without having to reach for their keys.
But now it’s launching a new device, called August Connect, that will connect its smart lock to the Internet and open up a ton of new features for users. Since going on sale in October, the August Smart Lock has enabled users to lock or unlock their homes seamlessly, without having to pull keys out of their pockets. Thanks to an intuitive mobile app and Bluetooth connectivity, the device also enabled users to give others access to their home without having keys made. By only supporting Bluetooth, however, the smart lock had one major drawback: Users could only interact with it when they were within range of it. With the launch of August Connect, the company hopes to gives users more ways to interact with the smart lock they already own. Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi is spoofing its own customers. Connecting to the web on a flight this Friday, Google engineer Adrienne Porter Felt noticed something weird. When she logged in, there was a red X over the padlock by the URL bar, a sign that something was fishy.
She was looking at the Google search page, supposedly protected by HTTPS, but the site wasn't what it seemed. A successful HTTPS connection to google.com usually means you can be sure all the data had come from Google and no one had messed with it in transit. The Nest Thermostat Can Now Be Controlled By Voice. Your house is cold, but your thermostat is way over there.
You could walk over to your thermostat and crank the heat, but pfft, walking. If you have a Nest, you could open up the app and control it that way, but, pfft, opening apps by hand. What is this, 2007?! As of this morning, you can now control a Nest with your voice. An old quirk in Windows is going away with the release of Windows 10. Microsoft has revealed that the upcoming release of Windows 10 will include a change that makes the Windows NT kernel jump to version 10.0. While Windows 8.1 was Windows NT 6.3 and Windows 7 was Windows NT 6.1, the numbering scheme will now match both the version and marketing names. Windows 10 Technical Preview builds are currently identified as Windows NT 6.4, but future builds will include the change, and Chinese site ITHome leaked images showing the 10.0 version of Windows 10 last week. The odd numbering scheme originates from Microsoft’s merging of NT and DOS-based versions of Windows. It left software like Windows 2000 with the 5.0 version number after years of Windows 2.0, 3.0, 3.11, and 4.0 releases eventually merging alongside versions like Windows 95 and 98.
