Spatial analysis software. BIG DATA. Picture 23 « Diagramming the Social Ecosystem. OrgScope Layers map complex organization networks. The hierarchy of positions is the “ground truth” terrain of the organization, zoom-able “down” to the unit person scale. Every position’s “altitude” in the organization is given by its level, indicated by a color scheme or a level number, which gives the jobs in the organization their “elevation.”

OrgScope produces an organizational relief map of an inherently 3-D structure With the organization’s single terrain map of positions, an unlimited number of layers can be added of nodes, links, and features that add “color” and detail to already existing nodes and links Layers offer a simple approach to mapping networks and adding layers of complexity We have often used the example of Google Earth to explain the idea of first mapping the organizational terrain (via the HR-LDAP hierarchy data), then overlaying additional detail as layers of information that could be switched on and off. Brad's Thoughts on the Social Graph. Translations: [ Беларускі ] I've been thinking a lot about the social graph for awhile now: aggregating the graph, decentralization, social network portability, etc.

If you've seen me at any conference recently, I probably talked your ear off about it. I've gotten good at my verbal/visual presentations, showing my slides , pictures of graphs, and adapting my delivery to you based on your background, facial expressions, questions, etc. This is all a lot harder to do in a blog post where the audience is so diverse, so I've been lazily putting it off. First off, before I explain what I've prototyped so far, and what I want to build (or see built) next, let me declare the problem statement, as I see it, and the underlying assumptions I've been making: Problem Statement: ¶ There are an increasing number of new "social applications" as well as traditional application which either require the "social graph" or that could provide better value to users by utilizing information in the social graph.

Thinking About Thinking Of the diverse problems that impede accurate intelligence analysis, those inherent in human mental processes are surely among the most important and most difficult to deal with. Intelligence analysis is fundamentally a mental process, but understanding this process is hindered by the lack of conscious awareness of the workings of our own minds.

A basic finding of cognitive psychology is that people have no conscious experience of most of what happens in the human mind. Many functions associated with perception, memory, and information processing are conducted prior to and independently of any conscious direction. Weaknesses and biases inherent in human thinking processes can be demonstrated through carefully designed experiments. "When we speak of improving the mind we are usually referring to the acquisition of information or knowledge, or to the type of thoughts one should have, and not to the actual functioning of the mind. If You Were a Terrorist, How Would You Attack? August 8, 2007 The TSA recently announced that most airplane carry-on restrictions will stay in place for at least another year, until new X-ray technology has been fully installed.

Surprisingly, one item that will now be permitted on board is a lighter. While it seems crazy to keep people from bringing toothpaste, deodorant, or water on a plane, it doesn’t seem so strange to ban lighters, which could be used to start fires. I wonder whether the lighter manufacturers were lobbying for or against this rule change — on the one hand, having 22,000 lighters confiscated per day would seem good for business; but on the other hand, maybe fewer people will buy lighters if they can’t travel with them. Hearing about these rules got me thinking about what I would do to maximize terror if I were a terrorist with limited resources. I’d start by thinking about what really inspires fear. My general view of the world is that simpler is better. I’m sure many readers have far better ideas.
