The Cult's 'Top 10' Books of 2010. It's that time of year again at The Cult when we appropriate Valentine's Day (close enough) for our own celebration as book smitten fiends. That of course, means publishing our second annual Top Ten list of books from the previous year.
It's not only fitting to post this on V-day, but pragmatic too, as I get a lot of books in December and need a month or so to finish up my year-end reading. These go to eleven. Or rather, this list goes to eleven, but let me explain. Friday, a friend mentioned a book to me with such an intriguing title that I immediately looked it up and read an excerpt.
After reading a couple of pages, I downloaded it and finished it over the weekend. Caveats: This list is based on my own highly personal and promiscuous reading habits and does not necessarily reflect our other voracious readers at The Cult, nor are they Chuck’s personal favorites or recommendations. Boilerplate (robot) Boilerplate is a fictional robot which would have existed in the Victorian era and early 20th century. It was created in 2000 by Portland, Oregon USA artist Paul Guinan.[1] Originally intended for comics, the character became known via a faux-historical website created by Guinan, and has since appeared in other media. Boilerplate was originally featured on a website created by Paul Guinan in 2000. The Boilerplate site details the history of a remarkable robot built in the late 19th century, and features photoshopped "archival images" in which Boilerplate (actually a 12-inch articulated model) is seen interacting with historical figures, such as Teddy Roosevelt and Pancho Villa.[2] Becoming aware that some visitors to the site were taken in by its contents, making it an unintentional hoax, Guinan resolved to see how authentic he could make the character seem, working to ensure the descriptions of non-fictional events were accurate.
He explained his motivation in a 2002 interview: Share Book Recommendations With Your Friends, Join Book Clubs, Answer Trivia.
