This method I have also seen in some methods of Ving Tsun. Though this creates a more stable stance as the equal and opposite force travels more into the ground than in the Fig. 1 method, the actual strike does not penetrate the target with the force it could do, as the direction of the kick on impact is more upwards and therefore has the effect of “stroking” the target. Fig. 3 is the method used in the Wong Shun Leung method of Ving Tsun. The foot travels in a straight line from the floor to the target. This is the most direct, most efficient and therefore fastest method. Wong Shun Leung always demonstrated these various methods of kicking at any of his seminars that involved him explain Ving Tsun kicking methods. Bong Sau (膀手), the Worthless Block. Kfmc Post in Martial Arts, Bruce, the Bong and Yip Man Bong Sau 膀手 (upper arm/wing block) is one of the first blocks that is taught in Wing Chun.

Bong Sau (膀手), the Worthless Block

It is an awkward block with the elbow held above the shoulder with the arm trained out in front of you. With the forearm making a 135 degree angle at the elbow. When first introduced it seems like a utterly ridiculous position. I still maintain that it is an utterly ridiculous block… unless that is where your arm happens to be. So is it worth training this technique? Wing Chun: The Fist of Spring Chant. Having watched the movie “Ip Man” and its two sequels has sparked my interest in another form of Chinese martial arts called Wing Chun.

Wing Chun: The Fist of Spring Chant

The origin of this martial arts is not really certain but the legend told by Ip Man is an interesting story. They say that Wing Chun originated from a Buddhist nun named Ng Mui who taught Yim Wing Chun. The young Wing Chun, at fifteen is a very attractive and athletic girl who rouse the interest of a local warlord. This man wanted to marry her but she refused him. Not to be easily put off, he challenged her to a duel and said that if she wins, he will not bother her anymore.

What I find interesting in Wing Chun is that it finds its essence in developing soft but penetrating force, the feminine force that is so unlike the brute force of other forms of martial arts. These are terms used in the Chinese martial art Wing Chun.

Wing Chun terms

Wing Chun terms are originally colloquial Cantonese (or even slang spoken in Foshan). The meaning might therefore be difficult to trace. Some of those terms are used in Jeet Kune Do, sometimes with a different meaning.
