It seems like more and more campuses are trying out Daily 5 so I wanted to share the schedule that our Kindergarten team came up with for last year.

I'm going to talk about "breakout sessions" in the schedule and that's a time when students are able to choose where they want to go: read to self (R), work on writing (W), word work (WW), listen to reading (L), or read to someone (RS). I have a chart that I print out weekly and I go down the list of students' names asking which station they would like to be at. This sounds like a long process but it actually took less than 3 minutes (we timed ourselves!). I made an example chart below.

They look at me like I'm speaking Spanish, but I try to keep plowing ahead with the analogies and examples until they are fluent in the "writing language" we use in class. Even though I am no longer allowed to use Units of Study to teach writing, I still find ways to blend great strategies into the Reading Street curriculum. We talked a lot about how watermelon topics are big huge stories full of lots of different ideas, just like watermelons are full of lots of seeds. I think I rearranged bookshelves and desks at least four times. My room is finally shaping up the way I want it to be, especially since I have two more bookshelves now! I have two days of "new" teacher orientation on Monday and Tuesday, and then my first official teacher day is the 19th. Head Off Behavior Problems With Classroom Procedures. The secret to warding off at least some behavior problems is establishing positive classroom procedures for daily tasks and activities. Your students will appreciate your consistency, and once they have internalized classroom procedures, the day will run that much more smoothly.
