The retro style badge/emblem of logos is a hot trend at the moment, and it’s no surprise why – They’re super cool! We’ve already looked at a showcase of retro and vintage style logos based on circular motifs, now let’s build our own.
We’ll put the basic structure together in Illustrator, then give it that aged vintage appearance with some finishing touches in Photoshop. The logo we’ll be creating is for the totally fictional Powerhouse Gym (although I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a gym somewhere with this name!). It combines many of the typical traits of this retro/vintage theme with alternating rings of black and white as well as fine details such as the stars and dots. Press CMD+F to paste in another duplicate, scale down and change the fill to white. The vector version of our logo is complete.
How to Create a Retro Style Textured Logo. Sunrays in Illustrator. Make a new document, standard A4. Create a new layer. Select the ellipse tool. Or press "L" on the keyboard. Make a circle, while holding shift down. Make sure the circle doesn't have any fill. Lock Layer 2. Select Layer 1 again. To make perfect sun-rays we need a perfect line. Activate the guides either by going through the menu or press "Ctrl+U". Select the line tool and hover the circle till a light blue "x anchor" pops up. Drag a line across to the anchor on the other side.
Now that the line has been created, we're going to copy a rotation of it. 10 degrees is more than enough, make sure preview is checked and then click copy. Two separate lines won't do us much good. .. and joining them either by going through the menu or pressing "Ctrl+J". Do this on both sides. Select our new-made shape, and change colour from outline to filled. We could rotate every ray manually but that is labouring and time consuming. Now start a new action. Then press copy. That's all we need, stop recording.
