Highsnobiety. Most of you have most likely recently visited one of the many big airports around the globe. No matter if you are in New York City, Paris, Milan, London or Frankfurt, while some are newer and more stylish than others, they are all overloaded with ads, signs pointing in every direction, screens and of course last but not least stores. Japanese architecture firm Nikken Sekkei (together with Ryohin Keikaku and PARTY) has decided to take a completely different direction for Tokyo’s Narita International Airport Terminal 3.
The newly designed terminal strips away all the unnecessary advertising, signs and ads and instead they decided to go with a blue track on the floor that tells visitors where to go. No electronic signs, screens and not even a finished ceiling are to be found in the new airport. As a result the terminal feels less hectic and more efficient, saving half of the cost is of course also a pretty nice side effect. Glow-In-The-Dark Highways Open In The Netherlands. After months of pilot testing, a glow-in-the-dark smart highway in the Netherlands has finally gone public in the Dutch city of Oss, and there are plans to expand the technology to other highways in the Netherlands and internationally. Glowing Lanes is a collaboration between Dutch engineering company Heijmans and Daan Roosegaarde, a tech-loving artist and designer whose previous work includes Intimacy 2.0, a dress that becomes transparent when the wearer gets aroused.
The glow-in-the-dark lane markers are intended to increase road visibility in a more energy-efficient way than traditional street lighting. Photoluminescent paint charges during the day and slowly emits light over the course of eight hours during the evening. After a few technical challenges (an early version of the markers didn’t fare so well in the rain), the final system has been installed, and according to Studio Roosegaarde, the kinks have been worked out, and initial reports of the paint fading were "overstated.

Treehotel...Sleep in Nature! The Mirror cubePhoto © Peter Lundstrom, WDO | Treehotel In a heavily wooded country like Sweden, it comes as no surprise when one comes across a hotel deep in the forest. However, the Treehotel is something beyond the ordinary. Located in Harads, a village in the northern part of the country with only 600 inhabitants, the hotel has made the forested region a touristic attraction. Designed by some of Scandinavia’s leading architects such as Martin Videgård and Bolle Tham as well as Mårten & Gustav Cyrén, the hotel promises to reconnect its guests with nature.

Photo © Fernando Guerra, FG+SG Architectural Photography Sometimes life is ironic and just when you think that everything is burnt – literally speaking –blossom emerges from the ashes. Such is the case with the Casa do Conto (House of Tales), arts&residence – a new Hotel design concept in the Cedofeita area in central Porto, Portugal; the lovely XIX Century Oporto House was being restored by Pedra Líquida (Liquid Stone) architectural office three years ago, once the historical restoration process was completed and just a few days before the hotel’s grand opening the historical building suffered a terrible fire, and from its ashes the new Casa do Conto was born.
Despite the distress and the sadness caused by this fire, the architects had to rebuild it, and rebuild it in a way so that it would be better than ever before so as to minimize the feeling of the loss. Sources: Casa Do Conto, Petite Passport.
