Redefining Knowledge Communication: Web 2.0 and the Digital Transition of the Academic Publishing Industry in China

Based on Open Access and Web 2.0 tools, online alternative platforms enable a transformative way of publication-based scholarly communication, which is more interactive, collaborative, open, and customised. This project examines the innovations and impact of these online models, asking how these initiatives are driving changes in the complex yet dynamic Chinese contexts. It will conclude by defining the role of the 2.0 initiatives in the digital transformation of Chinese academic publishing, from which practical suggestions on an adaptive model will also be derived.

This research is based on case studies of 2 Chinese platforms: Science Paper Online and New Science, in conjunction with interviews with stakeholders involved in digital academic publishing in China.
