It was only a matter of time before Calvin Nicholls' life-long passion in art and wildlife combined! The Canadian has been a full-time paper sculpture artist since the mid-1980's. With such a variety of animals in his collection, he's essentially created his own paper zoo. Many of the animal paper sculptures belong in Nicholls' most extensive collection, which includes over 75 pieces for Follett Library Resources in McHenry Illinois. The series began in the mid-1990's and continues to this day.

Story Behind Those Stunning Cinematic Gifs - My Modern Metropolis

http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/story-behind-those-stunning Here at theMET, we're always looking for creative projects that catch our eye. More than anything, we love posting about work that pushes boundaries, showing our audience something that has been changed, flipped or spinned into something magically different. Then, we see it as our job to find out the story behind such projects. What inspired the artist or photographer to start down that path? What do they hope others get out of their work? A few days ago, when Met member Mark Huckabee put up a post called Astounding Animated Gifs , we knew we had to dig deeper.

Architect and programmer Michael Hansmeyer has undertaken a most ambitious project, designing an incredibly ornate and complex column with over 16 million individual facets! Hansmeyer has taken his initiative beyond the computer design phase and actually fabricated a full-scale 2.7 meter (8.8 ft) column made from stacked cardboard sheets. Check out the pics and information below for more details on this fascinating exploration. The project involves the conception and design of a new column order based on subdivision processes. http://twistedsifter.com/2011/03/worlds-most-complex-columns/

Anamorphic Art by István Orosz (19 images)

http://www.funlobby.com/index.php/201004241651/anamorphic-art-by-istvan-orosz-19-images.html István Orosz was born in 1951 and after training as a graphic designer, he first gained recognition as a stage designer and for his work in animated film as animator and director. His posters and graphic art have featured in countless international design exhibitions, and he is well-known as a printmaker and illustrator too. He is perhaps best known for his renewal of the technique of anamorphosis. Anamorphosis is an art of distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to use special devices or occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image.

The Book Surgeon (15 pieces) - My Modern Metropolis

http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/the-book-surgeon-15-pieces Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. He also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original sculptural forms. "My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception," he says.

Watercolors by Grzegorz Wróbel | LivingDesign

This is awe-inspiring watercolor artwork by Grzegorz Wróbel. An architect by profession, Grzegorz Wróbel was born in 1983 and started painting with watercolors at the age of 12. During my studies at the Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, I learnt a lot about watercolors. Although the faculty of Architecture at this university has a strong tradition in drawings and watercolors, but most of my skills are gained from my own study and personal interest in this medium, and from friends who also work with watercolors. In summer time I usually draw from life.
It's impossible not to be blown away by Kirsty Mitchell 's Wonderland series. Picking locations that are genuinely real, Kirsty produces incredibly vivid, colorful, and beautiful fairytale-like settings. I reached out to Kirsty to ask her a few questions about the set. The answers she gave me were not only extremely thorough but also surprisingly candid. Below, she shares with us the story behind the scenes, the painstaking process, and the very intimate reason why she created this dream-like Wonderland ... Can you please give us a brief description about yourself?
