While we celebrate newborn girls by sending pink dresses and dolls, in the village of Piplantri in Rajasthan, India, they celebrate by planting 111 trees. That’s right, every time a little girl is born in Piplantri, 111 trees are planted in her honor! In most Indian villages, the birth of a daughter was historically considered a burden for a family. Rural villages operate on the dowry system which contributes to the high cost of marriage for households with daughters. As a result, daughters were often regarded as lesser than their male counterparts and many were married before they reached the age of 18; few received a proper education.
Violence against women derived from these attitudes is still a heated topic in India. This amazing custom was started by former village leader Shyam Sundar Paliwal to honor his daughter who passed away when she was young. All image source: Piplantri.com. Home. Future - Could ‘resurrection plants’ be the future of food? When she was a child, Jill Farrant, a molecular physiologist based at the University of Cape Town, came across an unusual plant.
It seemed dead, yet when the rain fell from the sky, it sprung back to life. Her father didn’t believe her. What Farrant saw was a “resurrection plant”, which can survive with no water for months to years. Seeing how quickly the plants recover is remarkable sight (Watch a timelapse in the video above at 1:30). Now Farrant hopes to tap these abilities to transform food production. The video above is part of a series called The Genius Behind: The most amazing and sometimes little known technological and scientific breakthroughs of modern times, and the innovative minds behind them.

Welcome to Dinovember — Thoughts on creativity. Every year, my wife and I devote the month of November to convincing our children that, while they sleep, their plastic dinosaur figures come to life.
It began modestly enough. The kids woke up to discover that the dinosaurs had gotten into a box of cereal and made a mess on the kitchen table. The next morning, the dinos had climbed onto the kitchen counter to raid the fruit bowl. The morning after that, they had managed to breach the refrigerator and help themselves to a carton of eggs. “Uh-oh,” we heard our girls whisper. Creativity. The Role of "Ripeness" in Creativity and Discovery: Arthur Koestler's Seminal Insights, 1964. By Maria Popova “The Latin verb cogito for ‘to think’ etymologically means ‘to shake together.’”
What a wonderful Rube Goldberg machine of discovery literature is, the countless allusions and references in a book guiding you to yet more great works. This was the case with the recent Dancing About Architecture: A Little Book of Creativity, which first flagged the 1939 gem A Technique for Producing Ideas and now brings us to The Act Of Creation (public library) — a seminal treatise on creativity, penned by Hungarian-British journalist and author Arthur Koestler in 1964. In this magnificent 700-page tome, Koestler itemizes the principles of creativity — “the conscious and unconscious processes underlying scientific discovery, artistic originality, and comic inspiration” — and sets out to outline a common pattern that can be trained and perfected. מטורף: שיטת קבורה חדשה תהפוך אנשים לעצים אחרי המוות.
