In 'response' to Theories informing my research , I would like to bring to attention another issue of concern regarding the empowering or restrictive properties the tacit and explicit theories have on individual's way of thinking and research. Sooner or later many of us are guided by set of theories, frameworks and paradigms in our research work, some of them tacit and some explicit.

They direct our research within the appropriate and relevant scholarly community, thus increasing the chances for scholarly collaboration and communication with like-minded folks. However, the same theories, paradigms and frameworks also limit our imagination and innovative thinking, they create the box within which we think and operate. Thus, they can have potentially negative effect by filtering away problems and issues that merit scholarly scrutiny but are not scrutinized because our mode of thinking does not allow them to reach us. The tacit theories seem to be more inhibitive than the explicit. Digital library - LISWiki. Digital library and its different aspect [edit] Abstract Information and Communication Technology has revolutionized the concept of libraries. Each and every library is slowly getting digitized.

A 'digital library' comprises digital collections, services and infrastructure to support lifelong learning, research, scholarly communication as well as preservation and conservation of our recorded knowledge. [edit] Introduction We are in the age of a networked society where IT in addition to its use in all spheres of human activity has been used extensively to record, store, and disseminate the information in the digital form.

The term Digital Library has a variety of potential meanings, ranging from a digitized collection of material that one might find in a traditional library through to the collection of all digital information along with the services that make that information useful to all possible users. The Digital Library is: [edit] Requirement for digital libraries On line resources: Daminfo.wgbh.org/digital_library_trends.pdf. Digital Imaging Tutorial - Digital Preservation. DEFINITION The goal of digital preservation is to maintain the ability to display, retrieve, and use digital collections in the face of rapidly changing technological and organizational infrastructures and elements. Issues to be addressed in digital preservation include:

Book lovers will be busy in the upcoming weeks. From 1st to 8th April the intellectually curious meet in New York City for the Rare Book Week - the largest gathering of its kind with numerous fairs, exhibitions, lectures and auctions.

The week is headlined by the 54th annual New York Antiquarian Book Fair, where over 200 international dealers display an astonishing array of rare books, fine art, maps, manuscripts, and ephemera. And as soon as the fair is closed bibliophiles pack again their bags and suitcases to fly to Paris where another major event in the bibliophile calendar takes place: The Salon International du Livre Ancien at the beautiful Grand Palais in Paris is regarded as the most elegant fair worldwide. The purpose of this manual is to document the repair and enclosure treatments commonly performed in the Conservation unit serving the circulating collections of the Indiana University Libraries at the Bloomington campus. The idea for this manual originally came from Karissa Tatman, who created the first model for a manual of this type while serving an internship here. Karissa later became a full-time conservation technician in our department. Though primarily intended as a resource for student technicians within the unit, the information given here may also prove useful to those who either are or wish to become responsible for the preservation of library collections or for those interested in the preservation of private or personal collections. Every attempt has been made to facilitate easy navigation through the manual. The complete table of contents offers links to both individual items and to more specific tables, and each table is headed for the sake of maintaining bearings.

Etherington & Roberts. Dictionary--Electronic edition. Digital Imaging Tutorial - Digitization Chain. INTRODUCTION Technical infrastructure refers loosely to the components that make digital imaging possible. The entire process is sometimes called the digitization chain, suggesting a series of logically ordered steps.

In actual practice, the digitization chain can have side branches, loops, and recurring steps, but for simplicity's sake, we present it here as if it were linear. The Digitization Chain The technology necessary to navigate from one end of the digitization chain to the other consists mainly of hardware, software, and networks. These are the focus of this section. A truly comprehensive view of technical infrastructure also includes protocols and standards, policies and procedures (for workflow, maintenance, security, upgrades, etc.), and the skill levels and job responsibilities of an organization's staff.

However, even the nuts and bolts of the technical infrastructure cannot be evaluated in complete isolation. Bonefolder. On January 13, 2012, Volume 8, the largest (and regrettably last) issue of The Bonefolder was published online. What started as an experiment in open-access online-only publishing “way back” in 2004 grew into perhaps the most widely read publication in the book arts with over a quarter million downloads for all issues combined since we began with a global readership.

Listing of the The Bonefolder in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) placed us in just about every research library’s online catalog, and participation in LOCKSS will ensure long-term access to all issues (as do Syracuse University Library’s and the Internet Archive’s servers). This growth, however, also brought with it ever increasing workloads for the small and incredibly dedicated editorial staff who solicited articles, worked with authors, and much more.

Introduction This tutorial on bookbinding is oriented towards the preservation of the contents of decaying pulp paperbacks; the first step in this process involves photocopying the decaying book, but most of this applies equally well to making up limited editions based on photocopies of manuscript pages or typewritten material Assuming you are starting with a decaying paperback, you should ask if you really want to destroy the original!

Conservation Book Repair, a training manual by Artemis BonaDea. Conservation Book Repair: A training manual by Artemis BonaDea Illustrated by Alexandria Prentiss Alaska State Library, Alaska Department of Education, 1995 Download Files Many conservation book repair programs in Alaska owe much to the author of this work. Artemis BonaDea has spearheaded the education of Alaska library personnel in these techniques since 1988. Beginning with brief presentations and one-on-one training in the 198Os, she has presented workshops in several Alaska locations since 1990. In 1990, the Continuing Education Committee of the Alaska Library Association (AkLA) and the Library Coordinators of the Alaska State Library identified training in book repair and conservation as a high priority.

As the workshops came to an end, this book began to take shape. The Alaska State Library and the Alaska Library Association collaborated in producing this publication, but primary credit must go to Artemis BonaDea who has worked very hard to make this a successful publication.
