Cheap broadband promise. The transformation of the eThekwini Municipality’s fibre-optic network has been completed and is now a next-generation network meaning that the broadband network has reached a stage where it can be shared with businesses, schools, hospitals and tertiary institutions and residents at vastly reduced costs. According to the Durban Municipality it is the only city in Africa to have reached this milestone and be in a position to provide users with affordable connectivity and low cost local phone calls.

This heartening news was conveyed to members of the press, the SmartCity forum and dignitaries from the eThekwini Municipality at a conference held on Thursday August 20 at SmartXchange. Jacquie Subban, Head of Geographic Information and Policy at the municipality, said that ultimately the network will span all businesses and residents in the greater municipal area at huge cost savings at vastly improved speeds. Durban broadband discussion. My Broadband ADSL Blogs. My Broadband :: 3G & Cellular : MTN shakes up broadband market with new prices. MTN’s drastic price reductions on its broadband products are sure to shake up the local wireless broadband market. MTN yesterday launched their “More bytes for your buck” advertising campaign, with both a reduction in price and an increase in data allowances.

MTN cut the price of their 1 GB ‘Extended Data’ offering from R 499-00 to R 399-00, and further included 1 GB of free data. This effectively gives users a 2 GB usage limit for R 399-00 which makes them the most affordable wireless operator in the market. MTN further reduced their ‘modem subsidized’ package to R 479-00 per month which also includes 2 GB of data. MTN taking the lead MTN, which has long been seen as trailing in Vodacom’s shadow regarding 3G and HSDPA offerings, made it clear last year that they are not content with playing second fiddle in the broadband market. The fact that MTN’s new offering is also available to their Pay-As-You-Go customers is something which should further ring alarm bells at the Vodacom head office. Speedtest.net. My Broadband :: ADSL : Unlikely entrant shakes up ADSL ISP Pricing. GOAL Technology Solutions, best known for its Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) services, has entered the ADSL ISP arena with a pricing model providing savings of up to 50%. GTS’s ADSL ISP accounts undercut the current SAIX and Internet Solutions pricing, with very competitive prices for accounts ranging from 5 GB to 20 GB. Their 5 GB ADSL account retails at R 228-00, far lower than the standard 3 GB offering from TelkomInternet which costs R 249-00. GTS’s 10 GB ADSL account costs R 399-00 while their 15 GB account is priced at R 570-00. The biggest saving for high usage ADSL subsribers will come with their 20 GB offering for R 648-00. This pricing compares very favorably against other SAIX based ISP’s where the price for a 20 GB account is in the region of R 1300-00.

GTS is, on average, over 35 % cheaper other ‘low cost’ ISP’s for 5 GB and 10 GB accounts and nearly 50% cheaper when it comes to 15 GB and 20 GB offerings. Discuss this article. NetMeter Homepage.
