On the occasion of the 1st edition of the Istanbul Design Biennial, Milan-based architect and photographer Antonio Ottomanelli has continued his on-going Mapping Identity research, in which he seeks to chart a collective biography of intimacy in particular contexts, such as Baghdad and São Paulo.

In Istanbul, Ottomanelli conducted a workshop with students from Marmara University, seeking to map a series of collective stories and framing them within the territory of the city. He surveyed and recorded a series of daily life episodes described by the workshop participants, who drew their stories on a map of the city and brought photographs to support their tales. The recorded stories combine outputs of mental mapping of the city, alongside the recollection of events of the everyday life focused on the perception of the space.

Under the Shadow of the Drone. I drew another drone, this one in Istanbul. More pictures: Drone Shadow 002, at Flickr. In February, Einar Sneve Martinussen and I were talking about drones. Einar is one of the team from AHO and Voy in Norway behind such wonders as Immaterials: Wifi Light Painting, and Ugle; both, in their way, visualisations of the invisible, instantiations of technological processes and communications. I’ll go into more detail in a moment about why drones, but the thing that bothered us the most then, staring at the little pieces, the models of drones which we had to hand, was trying to get a feel for what it would be like to stand next to one. To stand before, or under, it. So we drew one. In the car park of the studio in London, we measured out the proportions of an MQ-1 Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with chalk and string, and we sketched its shadow on the ground: a 1:1 representation.

Turkey has its own drone issues. İKSV debuts first İstanbul Design Biennial. İstanbul’s first Design Biennial is under way. It’s a big feature of the İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Art’s (İKSV) ongoing 40th birthday celebration, as well as an entirely new platform for presenting new designers to the world. The giant display of ingenuity and innovation is centered around the main theme “Kusurluluk” (Imperfection) and is divided between two venues: the Galata Greek School and İstanbul Modern. Running through Dec. 12, the double exhibition has two curators: Joseph Grima’s “Adhocracy” is in the Galata Greek School and Emre Arolat’s “Musibet” (Calamity) is at İstanbul Modern. Works include objects, photographs, video and film installations, inventions, research data presentations, models and interactive works and games.

Additionally, there are academic programs, workshops, parallel participants’ events, design walks, film screenings and seminars. According to Sudjic, the theme of “Imperfection” is a “new take on old ideas,” he writes in the exhibition handbook. Imagine, Pedro Reyes. Whilst in town for Audi’s Urban Future Initiative, we had the pleasure of taking in Istanbul’s inaugural Design Biennial – essentially a duo of exhibitions curated by Emre Arolat and Joseph Grima, for the Istanbul Found. for Culture & Arts, that weren’t afraid to challenge traditional beliefs of design, and to provoke a response through thoughtfully invited participants.

If you were looking for the latest, greatest chair from the latest, greatest big name in international design; you’d happened upon the wrong place. Serving to exemplify this point, one floor of the rather charming Galata Greek School – which was hosting Joseph Grima’s Adhocracy exhibition – was largely dominated by Imagine, a recent body of work from Mexico City artist Pedro Reyes. Thought-provoking, innovative and empowering, the pièce de résistance here is that the hastily cobbled together instruments actually sound bloody good (just listen to that bass in the below video at around 4:15), and the real clincher? Www.makerlab.info/projects/makerlab-istanbul-2012/# Adhocracy is part of the Istanbul Design Biennial. The exhibition presents a collection of some of the most relevant projects undertaken in previous years as part of the “Third industrial revolution.” Or as The Economist described it “The world of people who make things.” The scope of Adhocracy ranges from digital manufacturing and 3D printers to the re-appropriation of public spaces, open-source hardware and crowd funding. These are all important examples of how people are becoming pro-active, and how technology, and in particular the Internet, is facilitating that. MakerLab Istanbul centres on the connecting of the projects presented at the biennial and the realities of the city of Istanbul.

We came to Istanbul without a clear product to develop but based on the time, tools and materials available, we want to: Like in many cities, people have been disenfranchised from the sense of responsibility towards the public space. Istanbul's design community has come into its own as a powerful international voice.

As a testament to their rightful place in the international creative community, the city's Foundation for Culture and Arts hosted the city's first-ever Istanbul Design Biennial bringing together Turkish and international artists in a multidisciplinary showcase. Separated into two distinct exhibition spaces curated by Emre Arolat and Joseph Grima, respectively, the artists and exhibits were chosen in accordance with the Biennial's theme, "Imperfection". Each curator created a sub-theme that guided their individual exhibition. Arolat's installation at the Istanbul Modern centered around the idea of "Musibet" (calamity) and included works from a multitude of mediums. Located not far from "Musibet", Grima's exhibition, "Adhocracy" sprawls out over the floors of the Private Galata Greek Primary School.

The event will interrogate the following terms: invisibility, design, value, and commons. From the poster: "If design is not anymore of the 'exclusive' domain of a selected few and it is often developed with open-sourcing, a simple question comes up, what is then, design?

What is a designer? What is it that we call design in an open-source system? Promiscuous Encounters - Addressing/Assessing. Adhocracy. From Political Choice to. Street food printing, Adhocracy, istanbul biennial 2012. Projects - Stratigraphic Manufactury. Unfold presented Stratigraphic Manufactury for the first time in the inaugural Istanbul Design Biennial. Joseph Grima, curator of the Adhocracy exhibition and former editor of Domus Magazine, commissioned the project featuring Unfold's continuing work on ceramic 3d printing and its implications on design and manufacturing. In Stratigraphic Manufactury, Unfold builds on their Stratigraphic Porcelain series started in 2010 with their internationally acclaimed installation l'Artisan Electronique and explores methods of manufacturing and distributing design in the dawning era of digital production.

Stratigraphic Manufactury is a new model for the distribution and digital manufacturing of porcelain, which includes local small manufacturing units that are globally connected. One that embraces local production variations and influences. At the Istanbul Design Biennial. Last week marked the beginning of the inaugural Istanbul Design Biennial, curated by Joseph Grima and Emre Arolat and organized by the local cultural foundation IKVS — the same organization behind the city’s contemporary art biennial.

We’re homebound until Design Miami but our intrepid London-based correspondent Claire Walsh bravely reported back on her maiden voyage, which included a tour of the official biennial festivities (on view until mid-December) but also the occasional foray into Istanbul’s neighborhoods to capture urban texture, like the Memphis-style painted columns above. “Istanbul’s art biennial is renowned for tackling heavy themes, so there was a lot to measure up to!” She says. “Titled Kusurluluk (or “imperfection” in plain old English), this biennial posed pivotal questions about design’s role in growing metropolises like Istanbul, archaic organization, and what we understand design to be.

This wasn’t about tables and chairs. Hell no — this was cerebral. Unmediated Design: Tool-house City. The ongoing Istanbul Design Biennial (October 13th 2012 – December 12th 2012) builds on two complementary ideas – Imperfection and Adhocracy. Adhocracy, a term coined by seventies sociological futurist Alvin Toffler, critiques the idea of Bureaucracy by posing as its counter-point. It becomes a set of processes functioning without the mediation of heavy handed rules and regulations. Curator Joseph Grima, who invited us to be part of his Adhocracy section of the exhibition, took over this concept.

‘If design is no longer the domain of a select few creating products of consumption for “the many”, according to the top-down model of bureaucratic industrialism, what is it? This exhibition argues that rather than the closed object, the maximum expression of design today is the process—the activation of open systems, tools that shape society by enabling self-organisation, platforms of collaboration independent of the capitalist model of competition, and empowering networks of production.
