An analysis of government documents collected in a new book reveals a complex CIA scheme. Photograph via Flickr by Christian Zamora Che and the CIA in Bolivia Why did Che choose Bolivia? Landlocked, Bolivia was Latin America’s poorest, most illiterate, most rural and most Indian country. It was also the most unstable country in Latin America, having gone through more than 190 changes in government since it became an independent republic in 1825. Like Mexico in the years 1910 to 1920, and Cuba more recently, Bolivia was a Latin American country whose revolution in 1952 was based on popular participation.

Constantio Apasa, a Bolivian tin miner, summed up the political situation in his country in the year that Che arrived: “When the MNR (Revolutionary Nationalist Movement) came to power in 1952, we felt it was a workers’ party and things would be different. Al Jazeera has gained access to confidential documents prepared for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by his intelligence and security chiefs on the conflict raging across the nation.

The files - passed to the network by Abdel Majid Barakat, a former member of Assad's government - provide an insight into the regime's strategy to suppress anti-government protests, including the lengths it went to protect its strongholds. The documents, which run hundreds of pages long, reveal the establishment of what has been referred to as the Crisis Management Cell, formed to deal with the security situation. The following are several of the documents in their original Arabic form, alongside our own English translation. Document 1: The plan to deal with Aleppo Document 2: Sent from the Syrian government to the foreign minister (Signed by the head of parliament, and dated 11/10/11) Document 3: A document signed by the head of parliament (dated 25/09/11) Document 4: A presidential decree (dated 29/08/11)

China Sites. Middle East Resources. What I Didn't Find in Africa. By Joseph C. Wilson 4thPublished: July 6, 2003 Did the Bush administration manipulate intelligence about Saddam Hussein's weapons programs to justify an invasion of Iraq? Based on my experience with the administration in the months leading up to the war, I have little choice but to conclude that some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear weapons program was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat. For 23 years, from 1976 to 1998, I was a career foreign service officer and ambassador. In 1990, as chargé d'affaires in Baghdad, I was the last American diplomat to meet with Saddam Hussein. It was my experience in Africa that led me to play a small role in the effort to verify information about Africa's suspected link to Iraq's nonconventional weapons programs. In February 2002, I was informed by officials at the Central Intelligence Agency that Vice President Dick Cheney's office had questions about a particular intelligence report.

The world is drowning in corporate fraud, and the problems are probably greatest in rich countries – those with supposedly "good governance". Poor-country governments probably accept more bribes and commit more offenses, but it is rich countries that host the global companies that carry out the largest offenses. Money talks, and it is corrupting politics and markets all over the world.

Hardly a day passes without a new story of malfeasance. Every Wall Street firm has paid significant fines during the past decade for phony accounting, insider trading, securities fraud, Ponzi schemes, or outright embezzlement by CEOs. There is, however, scant accountability. Corruption pays in American politics as well. The FBI's investigation forced Scott out of his job. But why stop at governors or presidential advisers? Impunity is widespread – indeed, most corporate crimes go un-noticed.

Corporate corruption is out of control for two main reasons. Jeffrey D. Asia - political economy / history. Empire... Africa - History / Political Economy. Can Young People Save Japan? Toshiso Kosako, a professor at the University of Tokyo's graduate school and an expert on radiation exposure, announced late yesterday that he was stepping down as a government adviser. Prime Minister Naoto Kan appointed Prof Kosako after the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami which struck north-eastern Japan on March 11.

The disaster left 26,000 people dead or missing and damaged several reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant - triggering the world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl in 1986. In a tearful news conference, Prof Kosako said he could not stay and allow the government to set what he called improper radiation limits of 20 millisieverts an hour for elementary schools in areas near the plant. "I cannot allow this as a scholar," he said. "I feel the government response has been merely to bide time. " The prime minister defended the government's response as proper. "We knew all along nuclear power was dangerous. Mondialisation. Système-monde. International | Working to Protect Human Rights. Chinese diaspora in France.

The Chinese diaspora in France consists of people of Chinese ancestry who were born in or immigrated to France. Population estimates vary, ranging from 600,000 to 700,000 as of 2010[update].[1] Though they form a small part of the Chinese diaspora, the Chinese diaspora of France represents the largest overseas Chinese community in Europe (if excluding Russia) with the UK following second at around 400,000. Inicio. Inside North Korea; A Lesson for Christians. Eye-opening Documentary on North Korean Life Provides Lessons for Christians How a much-adored 'God-King' enslaves a sincere but ignorant people... A quite amazing television programme is currently 'doing the rounds' on cable television. I viewed it on the National Geographic Channel, in fact I have now watched it twice within about eight months. If you get the chance to view it, drop everything else you were thinking of doing and just sit and watch it! The programme is called Explorer: Inside North Korea and - despite the unpromising title - there is great food for thought for Christians in this production. Lisa Ling gives viewers a rare glimpse of North Korea and its absolute dictator Kim Jong II, who is known as the "Dear Leader" and who rules the country as a god-king.

American TV reporter Lisa Ling (of helpful oriental appearance) planned to go into the secretive North Korean state undercover by posing as part of the medical team. Religious Ecstasy Directed Toward the "Great Leader" Modern East Asia Research Centre. Russia's Line in the Sand on Syria. Syria is often called Russia’s last remaining ally in the Middle East, and Moscow’s continuing refusal to support the United States, the European Union, and the Arab League in condemning the Assad regime certainly appears to support that claim. The reasons cited for Russia’s allegiance to Damascus are many: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are said to have a sort of autocratic solidarity, with Putin afraid that the Arab Spring encourages challenges to his own rule; at the same time, Russia is thought to have major economic interests in Syria, including arms contracts, a Russian-leased naval base, and plans for nuclear energy cooperation.

There are elements of truth in all these assertions -- but they offer only glimpses of the broader picture. Moscow’s position on Syria is shaped even more by the recent experience of Libya, strong doubts concerning the Syrian opposition, and suspicions about the motives of the United States. Register.
