I don’t think this is because people aren’t writing blogs anymore – far from it; in fact there’s more and more. A few words on how the winners were selected. In addition to the categories provided, the judges were also asked to select a Wildcard Award – a blog that didn’t win their respective category, but which they felt deserved special recognition. Searching the social web during Hurricane Sandy: Challenges, lessons and reflections

Some rights reserved. During Hurricane Sandy people flocked to social media platforms to search and share the latest information on the impact of the storm. Similarly journalists were also busy scouring and speaking to communities on social sites, in an effort to gather, validate and push out information. In the days following the storm we spoke to social media and user generated content experts from the Guardian US, Associated Press and Storyful to discuss the challenges which presented themselves when searching the social web during Hurricane Sandy, particularly in relation to events in New York, the lessons it taught them and others and the way it reinforced the role of journalists in verifying information as quickly as possible.

How can the Health and Wellbeing Board in Leeds use Digital and Social Media? #sm4hwb

Why did the Health and Wellbeing Board want to know how to use Social and Digital Media? The Health and Wellbeing Board were making visits to many other areas of the sector such as the statutory sector and the voluntary sector, so they were interested in the voices of people with direct lived experience of services, or people offering innovative solutions in this space, whose voices might be drowned out by the big players in a shared event. What happened? I was able to get the wonderful people at Leeds Met Business Services to donate the space for the meeting (Thank you to Katie of QU2 and Old Broadcasting House who arranged this), and set up a free event on Eventbrite to handle the registration. I have been on the periphery of a few conversations and discussions about the use of social media both for teaching and learning and about use of social media more formally in training and learning.

Some partly alluded to in this post. I am generally of the mind that use of social media are best considered broadly within communication skills and that there may be some forms of guidance that can be offered, mostly in terms of modelling behaviours, it isn’t a subject that either can or should be taught as a distinct subject matter. These are my reasons 1) We are still at the early stages of knowing, learning and understanding the possibilities, format and etiquette of interactions which take place online. Opensourcing Professional Social Media Principles for Social Work

Having been to events and had discussions with doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and users of services that we all provide, I think there are some great models for the College of Social Work to build on and thought I’d try and offer some thoughts up into the field. On the buses. In the shoes of… Gill’s Mum :)

This would be a disaster for some people I regularly meet on the bus which they rely on, not just for transport but as a social lifeline. They talk to each other. Some people have no-one else to talk to all day – all week. Fares are not cheap which is no problem for those of us who can afford it but it adds a lot to the price of food. Until recently, the bus ran every hour and I enjoyed being able to choose a time that suited and return when I wanted. The reason for the changes is an amalgamation of several routes to and from Coventry via outlying places in order to make savings. Postscript: Live discussion: how to use social media in housing. Social media can be used to reach and influence large groups of people, boost tenant engagement and provide a platform for sharing best practice among staff. Yet a poll of Guardian housing network members has revealed the vast majority do not think the housing sector is realising its potential.

The ease of communication through social media also allows housing providers to inform residents of changes that may affect them. It helps tenants who cannot attend meetings to take part in a conversation with their landlord, and ensure their voice is heard. Sharing social networks with other housing providers could open the sector up, creating closer links between professionals and encouraging the exchange of advice and ideas. It has taken me just one month to collate another 100 social media statistics from countless (reputable) websites and articles (some of which are listed at the bottom of this article). Actually there may not be exactly 100 statistics here, but I figured it was close enough. I am going to aim to create one of these articles each month or so, so we can all keep up to date with the most recent statistics (and you don’t need to read 30 articles to get a full picture… like I did).

The Days of "Manager Knows Best" Are Ending - Sujai Hajela. By Sujai Hajela | 10:41 AM February 1, 2012 To get a glimpse of what tomorrow’s young global managers might be like as leaders, take a look at how today’s young people think about communications.

The Days of "Manager Knows Best" Are Ending - Sujai Hajela

For one thing, they are devoted to connectivity. In a recent survey of more than 2,800 college students and young professionals in 14 countries, Cisco found that more than half said they could not live without the internet, and if forced to choose, two-thirds would opt to have an internet rather than a car. This intense desire to be connected leads to a demand for greater flexibility: Two out of five people said they’d accept a lower-paying job if the position offered greater flexibility on access to social media, the ability to work from where they chose, and choice on the mobile devices they could use on the job.

Tomorrow’s young managers will share these attitudes, and workplaces will inevitably become more flexible. What is the appropriate level of openness? Health Professionals: How Not to Use Social Networks. Increasingly there’s guidance being issued by the various regulators – General Medical Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council etc – on how health and social care professionals should behave on social networking sites. I’m a firm believer that professionals can and should use blogs, Twitter etc in order to facilitate dialogue between the people who work in and use services. I think so long as you follow a certain amount of common sense, it can be done in an ethical and responsible way. This evening I’ve been watching various paramedics risking their registration by talking on Twitter in a way that could get them fired and hauled up before the Health Professions Council.

Untitled. Stay on Top of Your Professional Connections... Ev. A lot of technical people wrinkle up their noses when people suggest they “network,” whether it’s to find a new IT job or to get ahead in their current position. “Networking” sounds like something done insincerely, as though you are selling yourself or trying to hoodwink your contact into giving you something unearned. Yet you “network” all the time; you just don’t call it that. You might call it “hanging out with people who share the same interests I do” or “sharing experiences with that new server software ” but anytime you are visible and communicating, you are creating an impression. It makes sense to ensure that it’s a good impression that, down the road, might benefit your career .
