Just like The Silence turned out to be a religious order rather than an absence of noise, so the Moment, assumed to be the point in time when the Doctor committed genocide of the Daleks and the Timelords, turns out to be not to be a time, but a weapon (a weapon that looks remarkably like iPad game The Room). The Moment is so bloody dangerous that it's staffed by a conscience - which takes the form of Rose "Bad Wolf" Tyler. 2.

"I was there at the fall of Arcadia, some day I may even come to terms with that," was a throwaway line from a few series ago. 3. Her son, James, is a five-year-old in a bow tie. If you normally have strong negative feelings about children in bow ties, you'll have to leave those at the door of the Doctor Who convention.

It's the fancy dress party that never ends, running from pre-schoolers dressed as Matt Smith to (a couple of) men in their 50s, dressed as Patrick Troughton (among the many, many things I didn't know is that Troughton is the established Who of the true fans. Well, I salute the child who could get to grips with all the colour, plot twists and metaphysics on display in 'Day of the Doctor', surely Steven Moffat's most ambitious outing to date. What he successfully managed to do was provide us with a ripping yarn in its own right, while doffing his cap to the fifty years of the Time Lord that had gone before, with enough half-century in-jokes - Bad Wolf, anyone? - to please the most demanding of the millions of fans watching in 90 countries around the world. I was curled up in the armchair, but can just imagine the cheer that went up in cinemas when Rose Tyler first appeared. He impressed as a dashing eighth Doctor in the 1990s film, various audio stories and recently dazzled fans when he appeared in a brief clip released online last week explaining the origins of John Hurt's dark and mysterious Doctor.

But Doctor Who fans could be seeing even more of actor Paul McGann who has apparently refused to rule out taking up the job full time one day. McGann, whose Doctor was shown regenerating into John Hurt’s “War Doctor” on the planet Karn in the 6 minute 49 second clip was asked by the Sunday Times if he was “angling” for the role full time. “As long as the writing is good I’d be up for it,” said the star of the 1996 film Doctor Who: The Movie. How the writers would get round that given that he seems to come between Sylvester McCoy and John Hurt is anyone’s guess. Guardian profile: David Tennant, our favourite Doctor … his time has come. Regularly acclaimed as the nation's favourite Time Lord, the former Doctor Who star David Tennant is accustomed to travelling through space and time. But even if he had a real-life Tardis it is unlikely that he would travel beyond the here and now, such is his ubiquity across screen and stage. From his lead role in the ITV murder mystery Broadchurch to his return to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Richard II, via leading parts in BBC dramas The Politician's Husband and The Escape Artist, Tennant's tilt at world domination is enough to make the Daleks jealous.

Tennant will return to face the old foe in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special – reunited with his companion, Billie Piper, alongside incumbent Matt Smith and guest star John Hurt. Broadcast in 3D and released simultaneously in cinemas on 23 November, it promises to be the TV event of the year. Then he is off to crack the US in a remake of Broadchurch for Fox. Tennant ended a search for a Casanova which had seemed exhausted. Born. 'Doctor Who' 50th Anniversary Celebrations - Peter Davison To Join Matt Smith, Tom Baker And Other Time Lords. How to build your own Tardis. 28 July 2013Last updated at 20:30 ET By Mark Ward Technology correspondent, BBC News WATCH: Meet Yoz who built her own Tardis in her living room For some fans of TV shows knowing the trivia, quoting the best lines and dressing like their heroes is just not enough.

They need something more, something bigger, to demonstrate their devotion. Among dedicated Dr Who fans, Whovians, that something more, the ultimate expression of fandom, involves building a Tardis. It is a not a project for the faint-hearted, said David Lifton who built one for his son Rhys - the Whovian in the family. "It took an entire spring through summer of evenings and weekends to complete the build from start to finish, probably about five months in all," Mr Lifton told the BBC.

Apart from the sheer graft of cutting wood to make all the parts and then constructing the Tardis (which doubles as a garden shed), the hardest part was finding good plans to work from, Mr Lifton explained. Doctor Who? Matt Smith's departure sparks fevered speculation | Television & radio. Doctor Who: Matt Smith is to leave his role as the eleventh Doctor at the end of this year, in a Christmas special. Photograph: Dave M Benett/Getty Images It is a debate that hasn't actually run for the entire 900-year span of the Time Lord's life, though it can sometimes feel that way: who should be the next incarnation of the Doctor, and is it time for a woman and/or a non-white actor? The latest outbreak of speculation was sparked by the announcement that Matt Smith , who has held the Tardis keys for the past three years, will bow out with what the BBC described as a "spectacular exit", taking in a November episode marking the show's 50th anniversary, followed by a Christmas special.

Almost immediately bookmakers issued odds on who might be the 12th Doctor, installing Rupert Grint and Russell Tovey as joint favourites for little other apparent reason than, respectively, one co-starred in the Harry Potter series while the other has been previously, and wrongly, linked with the role.
