THE PAUSE PRINCIPLE: Step Back to Lead Forward posits that pausing to gain fresh perspective and transcend immediacies is the key to leadership excellence in today’s complex, dynamic world.

The Pause Principle

An antidote to our addiction to speed and transaction, pause is a conscious, intentional process of stepping back to reflect and deliberate, and then lead forward with greater clarity and impact. Rather than merely doing more, we must learn to pause and to do things differently in order to grow, achieve and innovate. In the book, Cashman provides the reader with real tools and practices to make pause a pragmatic practice of deep, reflective inquiry for focused problem-solving and for engendering creative insights.

All of these practices lead to purposeful change, and contribution, an essential part of a leader’s everyday life. “In our fast-paced, achieve-more-now culture, the loss of pause potential is epidemic,” writes Cashman. It pays to be smart with social media. “We want to inspire young people – and help them draw on their achievements – and we want to make sure they present themselves in the best way possible, socially,” says Kirstie Mackey, head of LifeSkills at Barclays, a programme that aims to help young people gain confidence and skills to apply for work.

It pays to be smart with social media

“You need to be shouting about positive experiences to boost your employability. That’s why our LifeSkills programme has developed new tools, which provide practical help to young people to present their best self online, using social media.” More than half of young people who have taken part believe LifeSkills helped them get a better job, and 70pc said it improved their confidence in interviews. Whether Will lands a job sooner or later, he’s at least given himself a head start through his online presence. “It’s a difficult environment, no question,” says Linda, “but he’s got so many tools at his fingertips – he can use social media to show how positive and creative he can be.”

The Modern L&D Dept requires other skills than instructional design. Instructional Design is for designing instruction. But in the workplace we don’t just learn from instruction, i.e. by being taught in classroom training or online courses. We learn in many different ways – from information, from working with our teams as well as through our own experiences in doing our jobs. In fact most of the way we learn in the workplace happens in these non-taught ways. Instructional Design is therefore not the right approach for helping people with all these other ways of learning; it’s not about designing learning for them, but helping people to learn for themselves as they do their jobs, and share their knowledge and experiences with one another.
