For the better part of two years I worked with Method Design and David Kufferman, PE on the design of the structural steel and connection system used for the cast stone panels in the Louisiana State Museum and Sports Hall of Fame.

The building was designed by Trahan Architects and opened at the end of June, 2013. As one team of multiple consultants working on the later stages of detail design and systems resolution, our own design process began with the surface geometry we inherited from the architects. This was comprised of a maya-modeled subdivision surface and series of nurbs curves that described the horizontal (bed) and vertical (head) joints that were to define the panel breaks. We, along with Case, Inc. were hired by Advanced Cast Stone to develop a fully integrated system for managing each of the over 1100 unique cast stone panels. At Method, we executed our work almost exclusively through Rhino + Grasshopper. Why Algorithms Are The Next Star Designers. The industrial designer of the future might just be a computer.

Why Algorithms Are The Next Star Designers

The traditional design process can be a laborious one, full of iterations and tweaks to make a product just so. For years, design software maker Autodesk has been working on an alternative: a program that sorts through all the ways to make a product of specific measurements and then spits out the best option. “In the past couple of years, we have experienced such an explosion of computing power that we can completely change the design equation,” says Autodesk chief technology officer Jeff Kowalski. Rather than using software to draw and analyze a designer’s vision, Autodesk wants to use that computing power to generate the idea itself--by running through a nearly infinite number of ways to build the same product.

This is another example of bitmap image based model which is applied on actual architecture world.I tried to get optimal sun-shade pofile based on the solar radiation map by converting into grayscale bitmap image.

BIMable (Data-Driven Design): Parametric sun-shade installation based on solar radiation map

Here is what i did. First, I got a mass and solar radiation map from model. Then, converted this image into the grayscale. Then, I made a parametric sun-shade model with grayscaled lengh sun-shade. Now, applied this patterned curtain system on the mass. Final step, applied grayscaled solar radiation map into this model. Data Driven Architecture.

One of the largest resources we have today is data.

Data Driven Architecture

We have information on almost every measurable subject. But what do we do with it? This project explores how data can directly influence architectural form. Welcome to Data Driven Design and Construction. Over the next year I will be writing a book, Data-Driven Design and Construction, to be published by John Wiley and Sons in 2015.

Welcome to Data Driven Design and Construction

The same folks who published my last book, BIM and Integrated Design, back in 2011. Since that book focused on information (the “I” in BIM), and this one on data, by this time next year I will have worked my way halfway up the DIKW pyramid. Albeit not in order. Design Optimization Flashblog: A Few Words about Process Analytics

I recently gave a talk at BIMForum’s spring event in Boston, and I figured that is as good a reason as any to restart my efforts over here at buildingdatum. If you’re into seeing what I look like as I meander through a presentation, you can watch it here. And if you want to see me kicking it onstage with BIM legend Patrick MacLeamy, that’s right here. Otherwise… For those of you that follow me in other spaces, you’ll already know that I’m fond of describing the building lifecycle as a series of informational transactions. In reality, things are a bit murkier. The social, technological, and legal constraints under which our industry operates all contribute to this fog of war. My PhD thesis – On collaboration. What is Network Design Methodology? - @immaginoteca

At Ecosistema Urbano we are actually applying network design in the project dreamhamar. _The article has been originally written in Spanish for La Ciudad Viva and then it has been translated by @la_madalena for dreamhamar blog _ “Learning is not a product of schooling but the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” – Albert Einstein For several months we have been developing in Ecosistema Urbano a project focused on expanded education. These last few weeks, we gave it a close look and we would like to share our thougths with you. Charles Leadbeater: The era of open innovation. Value of simplicity in design - Diagramming Machines.

When building generative design prototypes, I tend to either over-design solutions or do the quite opposite – not do enough design.

From getting things done point of view both ways are perilous. Wcm2012_single_0.pdf. Understanding Value Networks of BIM/VDC: AECbytes "Building the Future" Article. AECbytes "Building the Future" Article (April 4, 2013) John Tobin, LEED AP Director of Architecture, EYP “And no, we don't know where it will lead. We just know there's something much bigger than any of us here.” Steve Jobs Unanticipated Destinations The long-term impact of any innovation is often not understood when it initially emerges.

The initial goal of “smarter CAD” morphed into a BIM movement, which in turn morphed into a BIM/VDC movement, where BIM sows information in a model environment, while VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) largely harvests that information for downstream uses including commissioning, facility management, and construction logistics. The phenomenon of a new capability eclipsing its predecessor is not unique to BIM; many innovations that initially seemed straightforward improvements to an established process have ultimately transformed the original process in unexpected ways.
