Moleskine Alternatives — The Pen Addict. I spoke about Moleskine journals on the podcast this week and it generated a lot of spirited conversation on both sides of the ledger. I think it's pretty clear that I am not a fan of the brand, but I wanted to elaborate a little bit as to why. When I say Moleskine as a general term I am talking about one specific model: the hardbound Classic Journal in 8.25" x 5". This is the ubiquitous Moleskine.
The one that is fawned over by the press, and the one that doesn't fit my needs. That's the key here. For the most part, Moleskines work well with ballpoint pens, fine liquid ink pens, and pencils. Moleskine alternatives (Classic Journal, 8.25" x 5"), in no particular order: Leuchtturm 1917 - The closest in look, style, feel, and price, but with better performing paper for a wider range of pen types. Rhodia Webnotebook - My personal favorite, and the best for fountain pens. Baron Fig Confidant - Great style and format, could work better with fountain pens but great with gel ink. I understand the daunting feeling that comes with the end of college or the decision to leave a day job and take those first steps towards a career as an illustrator or cartoonist, having gone through it myself not that long ago. A few of you asked about the process stages between pencils and colors, so here’s a panel breakdown from chapter two. 1) Pencilled the characters (Elliot & Violet) and roughed in the background with non-photo blue pencil. 2) This time, I chose to draw the background separately with pencil and colored ballpoint. (As you can see, the detail in SPACE DUMPLINS is becoming as obsessive as HABIBI). 3) Then I merged the two in Photoshop and printed out blue lines on to Bristol Board paper. 4) Inked with India ink and watercolor brush – the lettering is Micron pigment pen. 5) The COLORS!

Aujourd’hui, cette campagne est devenue une boutique en ligne. Avant ce clic, il y a eu une préparation minutieuse.Après ce clic, il y a eu une tonne de surprises, bonnes ou mauvaises, beaucoup de gestion et beaucoup de suivi. Comme cet exercice était nouveau pour moi, j’ai essayé de noter et de compiler des éléments pendant la campagne afin de pouvoir faire un retour d’expérience précis et partager ce que j’avais appris. Je n’ai pas la science infuse et chaque projet est unique, les conseils suivants peuvent donc ne pas s’appliquer à votre cas, mais j’ai pris bien soin de tout documenter au fil de l’eau, ce qui fait que ce guide est la ressource en français la plus complète à ma connaissance.

Oct 9, 2013 Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Samuel Gomez is an artist and designer living and working in New York City. Gomez’s style embodies a ‘hybrid surreal-steampunk’ aesthetic and his preferred tools include: graphite, pens, acrylics and inks. Gomez has also worked over a decade as a Creative Designer and Illustrator for some of the top design agencies in New York and Chicago.
He graduated from Altos de Chavon in 1999 and received his BFA in Communication Design from Parsons in New York. In an ambitious artwork entitled Deadpan Comedy, Gomez drew a colossal triptych for the 2013 ArtPrize competition. The graphite and ink on paper drawing measured 18 ft (5.48 m) long and 5 ft (1.5 m) tall. This triptych drawing is a surreal graphic satire in which, instead of depicting the ‘ideally wished’ landscape of the future of nature, Samuel Gomez showcases the very things that are preventing us from moving forward and coexisting with nature in a responsible manner.

He says in his statement, “Even when working as a designer I instinctively work out concepts and ideas using pen and paper.” While for many of us fonts and letters are something we select with a mouse and type with a keyboard, Coulton carefully constructs them by hand. His personal projects featured here show song lyrics and town names transformed into meticulously detailed illustrations.
The letters are not only well formed, but are also accompanied by details appropriate to the message. They often contain images, flourishes, and font styles that hint at the history of a town or the mood of a song. Coulton uses this style to communicate his ideas in more ways than one. J'ai commencé par le remplir avec des aplats, dans la valeur la plus sombre nécessaire pour chaque partie, avant d'appliquer des rehauts, et de compléter en fonçant certaines zones avec un glacis.
J'ai commencé par la peau. Et hop, mon personnage est déjà transformé. Sans paniquer devant la propension qu'a l'acrylique à foncer en séchant, et avec une confiance absolue dans mes tests préalables, je fais de même avec cette belle chemise grise (blanche). Pour des reflets sur une Doc, je vous conseille la bonne vieille stratégie de la Doc posée devant vous. Le lendemain, j'ai fait tous les rehauts.
