We cling to misguided notions that persistence, endurance, and more of the same will result in a new future.
It won’t. 99% of the conversations I have about the future are actually about the past. People try to create a future by cling to or modifying the past. Frequently, the future is turning back to distant “glory days.” It’s futile. Memories without dreams are anchors. The future is made by those who face forward, not backward. Finding your future: Stop defining yourself by past methods, accomplishments, and behaviors. Point of stability: Focus on your values. Values guide-as-you-go without determining destinations. A Letter from my Future Self (#reverb10) — Life After College by Jenny Blake. This month I am participating in the #Reverb10 project with 4,000+ other bloggers (read the archive of my entries on my Tumblr); a daily prompt to help people “reflect on this year and manifest what’s next.”
I’m also incredibly honored to contribute as an author - today’s post is a response to my own prompt: Future self. Imagine yourself five years from now. What advice would you give your current self for the year ahead? Dear Jenny, I am so proud of you. By Deborah Brown-Volkman If the answer is no, then ask yourself “why not”? Life is short, and you never know when it will come to an end.
Do you really want to say that you lived a life of unfulfilled dreams? But “hold it!” You say. “I’m waiting for the perfect time” or “I’m waiting for the perfect situation”. So, what are you afraid of? And what happens if you do end up living your dreams? As a coach, I find that fear is the number one reason that people do not live their dreams. How do you move past your fears and live your dreams? 1. I meet so many people who say that they don’t have dreams or they can’t remember what they are. 2. How can you live your dreams if you can’t see what they are? 3. Your dreams cannot come true until you take a small step. 4. What’s keeping you from living your dreams? 5. Select people who will love you and cheer you on as you move toward your dreams. 6. You deserve it! 7. So, what do you say? © Copyright – Deborah Brown-Volkman.
