The secret US army files made public Friday by the WikiLeaks web site provide massive documentation of the criminal character of the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. WikiLeaks posted nearly 400,000 army field reports, filed by low-ranking soldiers after combat or reconnaissance operations, describing the death tolls due to US military action, attacks by anti-US insurgents, or the internecine civil conflict sparked by the US occupation. The reports cover the period from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2009, and therefore provide no data on the mass killings that took place during the initial US invasion in March 2003. The documents were made available several weeks in advance to selected news organizations, including the Guardian in London, the New York Times , the German news magazine Der Spiegel , the French daily Le Monde , and al Jazeera, the Arabic-language broadcaster based in Qatar.

On Friday there came another massive revelation, documents confirming all our worst suspicions about the Iraq war. Iraq Veterans Against the War, of which McCord is a member, said "We believe that real national security is created where government transparency and accountability, free press, and an end to spending on illegal wars and occupations are the norm." The free press failed this weekend, with the Sunday talk shows ignoring the Iraq War Logs in order to talk horse race strategy for the upcoming elections. Wouldn't you think this would be an election issue? This featured almost 400,000 classified US military documents that provide a detailed, if incomplete, record of the US occupation of Iraq from 2004 (a year after the invasion) until January 2010. The log revealed high level US military documentation of serious war crimes the US and its allies have committed in Iraq, including massacres of civilians and systematic torture. The release follows Wikileaks release on July 26 of a similar log of classified US military documents from Afghanistan, and the release on April 5 of video footage taken from a US Apache helicopter that was shooting Iraqi civilians. In the disturbing video, the US soldiers can be heard talking as though they were playing a video game as they killed a dozen people, including two Reuters journalists. The Pentagon, US government officials and much of the media have attacked Wikileaks.
