Ruinenland. Ruinenland. Mergelgruben Zur Galerie Bereits vor 2000 Jahren wurde hier im Tagebau Mergelgestein abgetragen, ab dem 15. Jahrhundert zum Bau von Häusern und Kirchen auch untertage. So entstand ein verzweigtes Gangsystem von mehreren hundert Kilometern, das sich in 10 bis 30 Metern Tiefe durch den Berg zieht, davon alleine rund 300 Km auf belgischer Seite. Was im ersten Moment unglaublich erscheint, wird letztendlich erst verständlich, wenn man sich die Pläne der einstigen Mergelgruben anschaut, die das Zustandekommen solcher Längen deutlich machen. Noch heute ist der Zugang stellenweise möglich, wenn auch alles andere als ungefährlich. Bewaffnet mit Getränken, Taschenlampen und einem Batterie-Vorrat, der mehrere Tage ausgereicht hätte, stiegen wir bei sonnigen 26°C den Berg hinauf und begaben uns auf die Suche nach der ersten Grube.
