As ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano continued to keep European airspace shut down over the weekend, affecting millions of travelers around the world, some government agencies and airlines clashed over the flight bans. Some restricted airspace is now beginning to open up and some limited flights are being allowed now as airlines are pushing for the ability to judge safety conditions for themselves. The volcano continues to rumble and hurl ash skyward, if at a slightly diminished rate now, as the dispersing ash plume has dropped closer to the ground, and the World Health Organization has issued a health warning to Europeans with respiratory conditions. Today, British civil aviation authorities ordered the country's airspace closed as of noon, due to a cloud of ash drifting from the erupting Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. The volcano has erupted for the second time in less than a month, melting ice, shooting smoke and steam into the air and forcing hundreds of people to flee rising floodwaters. The volcanic ash has forced the cancellation of many flights and disrupted air traffic across northern Europe, stranding thousands of passengers. Le Grímsvötn est un volcan d’ Islande situé sous la calotte glaciaire du Vatnajökull , sur les Hautes Terres d’Islande , dans une région éloignée de toute habitation et infrastructure. Il s’agit d’une caldeira n’émergeant du glacier que sous la forme d’un escarpement rocheux et abritant un lac sous-glaciaire , lui aussi appelé Grímsvötn. Le débordement de ce lac, généralement en raison d’ éruptions sous-glaciaires , entraîne régulièrement des jökulhlaups , des inondations brutales et dévastatrices. Le Grímsvötn est l’un des volcans les plus actifs d’Islande, avec en moyenne une éruption tous les dix ans au cours du XX e siècle . L’une des plus importantes est celle de 1996 , dont le jökulhlaup provoque de lourds dégâts sur la route 1 faisant le tour du pays. Celle qui s’est déroulée du 21 au 28 mai 2011 est la plus puissante de ce volcan depuis cent ans.
La saga de Hrafnkell ou Saga de Hrafnkell Godi-de-Freyr ( Hrafnkels saga Freysgoða en islandais , abrégé en Hrafnkatla ) est une des plus célèbres sagas islandaises . Probablement écrite à la fin du XIII e siècle , elle fait partie de la catégorie appelée Sagas des Islandais (ou Sagas des familles), qui racontent les faits marquants des premiers colonisateurs de l'Islande et de leurs descendants au X e siècle . Par son style et sa construction elle est un des chef-d'œuvres du genre, et elle a joué un rôle central dans les études et les débats sur l’origine des sagas islandaises. Elle retrace l’affrontement de chefs de clans dans l’est de l’île. Le héros éponyme de l’œuvre, Hrafnkell, se taille une solide réputation de duelliste et voue une adoration toute particulière au dieu Freyr .
