As a result, developers, architects, and planners are looking for ways to build structures that use significantly less energy than even the top-rated "green" buildings of today. Read more

Lately, I've been focusing on my health and fitness. With that, I've been noticing that there seems to be a hell of a lot of push to spend lots of money on fitness activities and accessories. Unfortunately, I hear people use money as an excuse to *not* invest in their health.

http://www.lowimpactliving.com/blog/2009/07/07/affordable-shipping-container-house-in-quebec/ Shipping containers are at the forefront of a new era of usefulness. Traditionally used to carry goods via cargo ship, train or truck, these steel boxes are capable of withstanding huge amounts of pressure and weight. This makes them structurally stable, fireproof, mold-proof and weather-proof. Unfortunately each has a lifespan of only 20 years for its original purpose. That means when their work is done hauling stuff, they get retired and sent to junk yards or landfills even though they are still structurally solid.

Thought I'd better do a bit of an audit on how we're going with the challenge of eating locally produced food. It is a huge struggle I have to say, I doubt we are more than 50% there yet. Firstly, we have given up rice, we've only had it once since I started and that was from a bag I already had. Since it is imported from Pakistan there is absolutely no way it fits into the challenge. When it runs out we won't be getting any more except maybe for very special occasions.

Survive and Thrive TV is an outlet devoted to sharing ideas that help people survive and thrive in our changing world. Our world is facing issues with debt, energy and food prices, and declining real wages as a result of increased global competition, corporate mergers and outsourcing. In the midst of all this, working with members of the Social Networking Alliance, we discovered people who were finding greater joy and new opportunities in our chaotic times. What is happening with debt, energy, food, and world incomes will dramatically change how we live. Many governments, households, and companies across the globe can no longer service their debts.

The Vulnerable Koala: are we in time to save our national icon? This week, the Australian Government listed several koala populations as “vulnerable”, giving them special protection. As a koala researcher and conservation planner, I am most impressed with Minister Burke’s decision. http://www.mygreenaustralia.com/

The Greening of Gavin

http://www.greeningofgavin.com/ During the last week, we have been chook sitting. A bit like baby sitting but with chickens. Our neighbours asked us if we would like to look after their little hens as they were going to Fiji to get married, so we jumped at the chance.
I spent much of this morning on the phone with a friend who is one of the top leaders in corporate sustainability. He wanted to know my thoughts on "innovation" and "progress." Did I think they were good or bad? http://noimpactman.typepad.com/
