Roll Your Own Extractor

Asked my wife, as I pitched her my latest project. A veteran, some would say survivor of fourteen years of my schemes and contraptions, my wife saw the gleam in my eye as soon as I started describing it. Let's Make a Candyboard for Winter Feeding - Overwintering Honey Bees

Time to make a Candyboard for Winter feeding. Buy a candy board frame here! In the midst of all my running around, cooking and baking for the holidays, the family members I could not yet forget about were my bees. In winter, honeybees consume much of the honey they work all spring and summer to produce. This winter has been milder than average, which I am loving, but the warm temperatures are causing the bees to move around more than normal.

In the warmer weather honey bees will drink sugar syrup, but the New England winters are much too cold for that and other methods of feeding have to be used. Destructive Bee Health Pests. In the mid-1980s, the number one destructive pest of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera), the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, was introduced to the United States and has since spread to almost all honey bee colonies in North America.

Destructive Bee Health Pests

Varroa was first detected on western honey bees back in the 1950s after shifting from its original host, A. cerana. It now is present in most areas of the world where the western honey bee is present, as a result of natural migration, but most actively with assistance from humans who move bees for trade both legally and illegally (Navajas, 2010). Dave Cushman died on 22nd February 2011 A major reason why Dave generated this website, which is dedicated to the study of bees, is to educate, both beekeepers and the general public about bees in general and the specific methods used by beekeepers in handling bees as well as the means whereby we can breed "better" bees.

Beginner to Beginner Queen Rearing

I originally wrote this article in 2011, since then I have continued to keep bees and rear some queens every year. I have tried most of the other popular methods, but this one is still my favorite for the size of my apiary and my needs. As I have learned new things I have incorporated those into this article.

So, on with it… I’m a beginner. I’m going to give several beginner-to-beginner tips in this article. Plan to practice rearing queens when it’s easiest – during the main flow/swarm season, that is – late April/Early June in Mid TN – when the bees want to reproduce. The Basic Principle of Honey Bee Queen Rearing Any queenless hive of honey bees will try to make a new queen if it has the resources to do so. So if you want to raise a new queen, all you really have to do is create a hive without a queen which has eggs or very young larva, and let the bees do the rest.

Ecological Role:Competition among nectar- and pollen-feeding invertebrate pollinators and resource partitioning are affected by introduced Africanized Honey Bees.

Killer Bees

When Africanized Honey Bees compete with other species of honey bees for flowers, the Africanized bees may displace the other bees from the food sources. While over a short period of time, the abundance of other species of bee decreases and colony nectar and pollen harvest decreases, Africanized honeybees are negatively affected slightly over long periods.
