" If you find a mess on the ground, you clean it up regardless of who might have made the mess. You intentionally improve the environment for the next group of campers. Actually the original form of that rule, written by Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, the father of scouting, was "Try and leave this world a little better than you found it. " What if we followed a similar rule in our code: "Always check a module in cleaner than when you checked it out. " No matter who the original author was, what if we always made some effort, no matter how small, to improve the module. What would be the result? I think if we all followed that simple rule, we'd see the end of the relentless deterioration of our software systems.

Le commun des mortels (moi le premier avant de découvrir le LSS) a tendance à confondre efficacité et efficience (en anglais effectiveness et efficiency). Or ces deux notions se recouvrent certes mais ne désignent pas la même chose. Etre efficace c’est remplir le contrat, c’est satisfaire le Client, c’est traiter tous les points à l’ordre du jour de la réunion, c’est réussir son concours, c’est ramener plein de poissons dans le fond de son bateau… Mais cela ne me dit rien sur les ressources utilisées pour obtenir ce résultat c.à.d. sur l’efficience.
J’ai pu pêcher à la dynamite, j’ai pu préparer mes concours comme un gros bœuf, j’ai pu mobiliser mon équipe une demi-journée pour la réunion de service, j’ai pu embaucher des intérimaires pour satisfaire mon Client…bref j’ai pu être efficace sans forcement être efficient. L’efficience c’est l’efficacité au moindre coût. Beaucoup plus qu’une simple différence sémantique Le Client ne verra que l’efficacité. Lean et Six Sigma.
