If you haven’t heard of them, this will be a pleasant surprise. It all started the first time I was traveling across Canada. We were driving in a purple minivan with Collective Evolution decals on the side. We received an email from someone saying they saw us driving around Ottawa and wanted to invite us over for a chat at their earthship. I says to my travel buddy I says “What is an earthship?” “. . . the Earthship is the epitome of sustainable design and construction.
As the creators Earthship Biotecture describe it “An earthship is a type of passive solar house made of natural and recycled materials.” Heating & Cooling This is probably one of the most exciting things about earthships as they take care of some of the most expensive aspects of a home; heating and cooling. The design of the walls creates thermal mass which allows the home to collect heating during the day from the sun and store it in the walls.

External funding is wonderful if you can get it but it does come with its own set of problems, not least what happens to the project once the funding has been spent? If your project can be at least part self-financing it will make life a lot easier when you have to meet ongoing costs in the future. Would it be possible to offer adoption opportunities within your community garden, allotment or orchard?
Many community orchard projects allow individuals or businesses to sponsor individual trees and it is more than possible to finance all the planting material and even much of the planting costs from this kind of adoption opportunity. There might also be interest in adopting benches and other features within the project. Local business might be worth approaching regarding the possibility of sponsorship.

In addition to what you need to make a regular hoop, to make a collapsible, you need: Four connectors per hoop instead of oneBulk bungee corduncoated coat hanger wirea power sander (or a lot of patience)several pairs of pliers and several hands Fair warning on two points: First, sanding down the connectors produces plastic dust that you do not want in your eyes or lungs. Wear goggles, do it outside, wear a mask. Here's how it works: Measure off a length of tubing to your desired hoop size, and cut. Heat one end of each of the four tubes, and slide the non-sanded ends of the connectors into each, up to the halfway point, leaving the sanded ends sticking out. You should be able to pull the hoop apart with some effort, but when spinning at top speed it should stay together.
