He steps to the counter and asks Marcia Fuller, owner of Red Brick Books, the last bookstore in Springfield, if she has a copy of “The Emperor Wears No Clothes,” a book used in efforts to decriminalize cannabis.

The title flickers recognition in Marcia’s eyes. She pulls to her eyes the glasses parked on her head. There are more than 30,000 books in the store, including a paperback titled: “Dukakis: The Man Who Would Be President.” “What’s the author’s name?” “Jack Herer,” Chris says, adding, “he died a couple of months ago. “I had the book,” she says after a few keyboard swipes. Chris is disappointed – so close – but tells Marcia he likes her store. “I drive past here all the time,” he says. “I’ll be here,” Marcia says, “except Sundays and Mondays.” Marcia was born five days before the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the oldest of eight children.
