Welcome to about.me. SUNfiltered : Fresh culture daily. » Blog Archive » Gabby Giffords: Congress’ voice for solar power. No doubt most of us are still experiencing some shock after Saturday’s mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, which took the lives of six people, and wounded 14, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Dignitaries from President Obama to Arizona governor Jan Brewer have spoken highly of Giffords’ work ethic, passion, and common-sense approach to policy. Less mentioned (though not ignored) was Giffords’ focus on, and expertise in, solar power development.

A quick glance at the section of her official website dedicated to the subject demonstrates her commitment. Giffords worked not only to author and advance legislation to make solar competitive with traditional energy sources, but also to educate her constituents and others about the benefits of this renewable energy source. Among the bills Giffords introduced in the House: First and foremost, we wish Rep. A crafty recycling option for 2010 calendars.Got a pool? Facebook is well on its way to becoming the most popular way that people share links, photos, and other content with their friends. For many sites it’s becoming a powerful new driver of traffic — get people to ‘Like’ your stuff, and Facebook’s network effects will expose it to dozens of their friends.

Just make sure not to do something that might make Facebook angry. Otherwise it might nuke every link to your site, choking off this river of traffic that you’ve worked so hard to build. That’s the message Facebook sent today with its censorship of links to Lamebook, a humor site that posts lewd conversations spotted on the social network. Update: Facebook CTO Bret Taylor has written this statement, explaining that this was a mistake. This was a mistake on our part. The move was precipitated by a legal battle between the two companies. Okay, so Facebook doesn’t like Lamebook’s name.

One reason why Google has done so well is that people trust it. The Positive Experience 2/16/2011 - Joeygiggles | Internet Radio. Fifteen years ago, a research group called The Fraunhofer Institute announced a new digital format for compressing movie files. This wasn’t a terribly momentous invention, but it did have one interesting side effect: Fraunhofer also had to figure out how to compress the soundtrack. The result was the Motion Picture Experts Group Format 1, Audio Layer III , a format you know and love, though only by its acronym, MP3.

The recording industry concluded this new audio format would be no threat, because quality mattered most. Who would listen to an MP3 when they could buy a better-sounding CD at the record store? Then Napster launched, and quickly became the fastest-growing piece of software in history. If Napster had only been about free access, control of legal distribution of music would then have returned the record labels. How did the recording industry win the battle but lose the war?

The people in the music industry weren’t stupid, of course. But who faces that choice? John Battelle's Tumblog, You Know What's Also Interesting About Tumblr. We've (Still) Lost the Backlink, and I For One Want It Back. Remember back in the halcyon days of the web, when bloggers shared a sense of community with each other, linking back and forth to each other as a matter of social grace and conversation, as opposed to calculated consideration?

Well, if not, that’s how it was back in 2003 or so, when I started blogging. Now, that signal (who linked to you recently) is gone, and honestly, not just for blogging. It’s also gone for most of the web. Of course, you can find it, if you want to geek out in your refer logs. But honestly, why have we buried it there? The funny thing is, this is the very signal Larry Page was looking for when he came upon the idea for Google with Sergey. I sense there’s about to be some serious reconsideration of the value of declarative and transparent backlinks. All of this brought on by my continued and early explorations of Tumblr….
