How to Build Sight Word Fluency. Sight words are the most commonly used words in the English language. Accordingly, a majority of the words that we read in a text are considered sight words. For example, I, you, and the account for 10% of all words in printed English! Therefore, students need to know sight words instantly and accurately in order to build fluency and comprehension. In general, teaching sight words employs a “whole language approach,” which means it is not phonics based.

However, when sight words are coupled together with phonics, we build strong, confident and fluent readers. To be clear, sight words are not a substitute for teaching phonics. Rather, sight word instruction helps students master reading words that frequently occur in a text so they don’t have to stop and decode every….single….word.
