The Real Face Of George Washington - The Early America Review, Spring 1997. George Washington's life mask was made in 1785 by French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon when Washington was fifty-three.

In commenting to a friend, Houdon said he had no idea of "the majesty and grandeur of Washington's form and features" until he studied him as a subject. The life mask shows Washington as he really appeared in life....without the personal and, often, subjective interpretations of the many artists, painters and sculptors who came to sketch, paint and model his countenance. When Washington returned to Mount Vernon after the War, he was one of the most famous men in the world. His newly-won celebrity status brought him a steady pilgrimage of visiting foreigners, Americans, historians and innumerable artists, all of whom consumed many hours of his time.

It has been the good fortune of generations of ever since that Washington had the patience to allow Antoine Houdon to create an important artifact as part of our national heritage. Frontier Forts. During the American Revolution - 1776-1783 - frontier forts played an important role.

The frontier could be a dangerous place. With no police force for protection, settlers often built forts for refuge in times of threat. Native Americans, sometimes angered by the presence of settlers on lands they had used for generations for hunting and fishing, were known to threaten settlers. On other occasions, men might leave to serve in local militias, and forts were a place for families to wait in safety for their return. Boston Massacre. When Paul Revere first began selling his color prints of "The Bloody Massacre perpetrated in King Street" in Boston, he was doing what any like-minded patriot with his talents in 1770 would have done.

Only, Paul Revere did it faster and more expeditiously than anyone else, including two other artist-engravers who also issued prints of the Massacre that year. Twenty-one days before — on the night of March 5, 1770 — five men had been shot to death in Boston town by British soldiers. Precipitating the event known as the Boston Massacre was a mob of men and boys taunting a sentry standing guard at the city's customs house. When other British soldiers came to the sentry's support, a free-for-all ensued and shots were fired into the crowd. Four died on the spot and a fifth died after four days. The presence of British troops in Boston had long been a sore point among Boston's radical politicians. Notice also that Revere's engraving shows a blue sky. The World of Benjamin Franklin.
