Call Me The Breeze - Lynyrd Skynyrd‬ - Southern Fried‬ Once a fan, always a fan: a report on the “most over the top” Levon Helm Midnight Ramble ever | The 6149. “Tonight is going to be the most over the top Ramble we have ever had.”

Damn straight, Barbara. Damn straight. That was the statement that Levon Helm’s manager and Midnight Ramble host, Barbara O’Brien, made when she kicked off the night’s festivities. I had already experienced the Ramble twice in 2011; I went back on 3rd December hoping that the third time would be a charm. It was. I am from New Hampshire, but I now live in London, UK.

My first Ramble was on 29th January, 2011. (“once you get it, you can’t forget it … “) After my second Ramble [8th August] I had them old anxious-blues again and was looking for an excuse to get in the big bird and fly back to Woodstock, N.Y. to visit ol’ Levon and friends again. In late October I received my handy Levon email newsletter. If you don’t know Dawes, watch this: Okay, now you see what I mean. At one point or another we are all fans. Me and Dawes, we were both in Woodstock for the same reason: the experience that is the Ramble. Wholly shit. Ike & Tina Turner - River Deep Mountain High (original promo).mpg. There have been some mighty horrible renditions of Led Zeppelin‘s Stairway To Heaven, but when Nancy and Ann Wilson of Heart performed the song in front of the three remaining members of the legendary British rock band at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony on Dec. 2, it made Robert Plant cry tears of joy.

(The band was being honoured by President Barack Obama alongside David Letterman and Dustin Hoffman.) Watch it and understand why. When the choir kicks in and Ann Wilson wails Plant’s famous “And as we wind on down the road…” you might shed a tear or two yourself. Want more Stairway? When Traffic released their debut album, ‘Dear Mr. Fantasy,’ in late 1967, they really sounded like no one else at the time. While they weren’t as psychedelic as many of their peers, they mixed blues, jazz, soul and folk with the heady atmosphere of the era.

In early 1968, the band began work on its second LP, which it titled, simple, ‘Traffic.’ But before recording sessions even started, the group faced a bit of turmoil after co-founder Dave Mason left to pursue a solo career. So, Traffic — now a trio consisting of drummer Jim Capaldi, woodwinds player Chris Wood and Steve Winwood on keyboards, guitars and vocals — hit the road. By the time they returned in May 1968, Mason reconsidered his departure and returned to the group. Another Mason song, ‘You Can All Join In,’ opens ‘Traffic,’ followed by Winwood’s ‘Pearly Queen.’ ‘Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring,’ co-written by Winwood and Capaldi, features just the two of them.
