Why are filament spools so expensive compared to pellets?

Since you seem to be completely unaware, most of the cost in extruding filament comes from the labor in spooling the filament and watching over the machine.

Large spools are quite a bit cheaper than small spools since they don't need to be changed nearly as often. The diameter is also controlled by cool (and expensive) things like lasers, which are unnecessary when extruding pellets. One of our printers is the Orca, which is well known on the market. Our main goal is to sell high quality, but affordable 3D printers. Every day, our development team is working on improvements and new technology. We also sell filaments, parts and give instructive workshops. Since 2014 Orcabot has become part of Prodim International BV.

Polylactic acid. Poly(lactic acid) or polylactide (PLA) is a thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch (in the United States), tapioca roots, chips or starch (mostly in Asia), or sugarcane (in the rest of the world). In 2010, PLA had the second highest consumption volume of any bioplastic of the world.[3] The name "poly(lactic acid)" does not comply with IUPAC standard nomenclature, and is potentially ambiguous or confusing, because PLA is not a polyacid (polyelectrolyte), but rather a polyester.[4] Production[edit] There are several industrial routes to usable (i.e. high molecular weight) PLA.

Two main monomers are used: lactic acid, and the cyclic di-ester, lactide. Thirty minutes north of Omaha, outside Blair, Nebraska, the aroma of steaming corn—damp and sweet—falls upon my car like a heavy curtain.

Corn Plastic to the Rescue

The farmland rolls on, and the source of the smell remains a mystery until an enormous, steam-belching, gleaming-white architecture of tanks and pipes rises suddenly from the cornfields between Route 75 and the flood plain of the Missouri River. Behold NatureWorks: the largest lactic-acid plant in the world. Into one end of the complex goes corn; out the other come white pellets, an industrial resin poised to become—if you can believe all the hype—the future of plastic in a post-petroleum world. The resin, known as polylactic acid (PLA), will be formed into containers and packaging for food and consumer goods. The trendy plastic has several things going for it. To make plastic packaging and containers from a renewable resource that can be returned to the earth as fertilizer sounds like an unmitigated good. 12 Ways to Fight Warping and Curling

Depending upon the parts being printed, this effect can lead to warping and curling. Although PLA has a much lower shrinkage factor than ABS, both can warp and curl, potentially ruining a print. There are some very common ways to deal with this potential problem, the most notable being a heated build platform. Use a heated build platform. If you’ve got some suggestions, tips, or tricks that you use to fight warping and curling, please leave a comment below!

Printing with PLA. About PLA PLA, or Polylactic Acid, is a biodegradable plastic with a lot of features that make it great for 3D printing -- it doesn't give off fumes like ABS does, or warp nearly as much.

Thing-O-Matic MK7 PLA Set-Up and Troubleshooting (Likely MK8)

While a vast improvement over previous extruders, the MK7 can still prove challenging for those wanting to get started with PLA. However, while PLA is more picky in the settings surrounding how it is printed, its benefits over other printing materials make getting over the calibration hurdle well worth it. It has little to no smell when extruded, can be used without a heated bed, undergoes less warping and cracking and can produce highly detailed features and surfaces when used in conjunction with a cooling fan. So read on and with any luck you'll be happily printing with it too.

While following applies directly to those using an MK7 on a Thing-O-Matic using skeinforge 35, those using other machines and configurations should find some of this information useful.
