The Order of Melchizedek. In considering the significance of the Melchizedek priesthood we must first look at Genesis 14. In 14.18 we read 'And Melchizedek, King of Salem, brought out bread and wine, and he was a priest of El Elyon (God Most High). And he said, "Blessed be Abram of El Elyon, possessor of heaven and earth, and blessed be El Elyon who has delivered your enemies into your hand". And he (Abraham) gave him a tenth of all.' This sudden appearance of Melchizedek of Salem takes us by surprise. If Salem is Jerusalem, although that is not certain, it is not on the expected return route from Damascus to Sodom, and Melchizedek has not previously been obviously involved. There must therefore be something especially significant behind his appearance. Clearly Melchizedek is seen as involved somehow in what has happened, and sufficiently so to take the trouble to bring victuals to the returning troops.

We have now come to the nub of the narrative. But why should Abram hand over one tenth of all the booty? Athinganoi. The Athinganoi or Athingani, Ancient Greek: Ἀθίγγανοι, plural of Athinganos ( Ἀθίγγανος), were a 9th-century sect of Monarchians located in Phrygia, founded by Theodotus the banker. Another quite distinct sect or party is refuted by Marcus Eremita, who seems to have been a disciple of St.

John Chrysostom. His book Eis ton Melchisedek, or according to Photius "Against the Melchisedekites",[1] speaks of these new teachers as making Melchisedech an incarnation of the Logos (divine Word). They were anathematized by the bishops, but would not cease to preach. It is uncertain whether the sect survived beyond the 9th century. The etymology of the word is not certain, but a common determination is a derivation in Greek for "(the) untouchables" derived from a privative alpha prefix and the verb thingano (to touch).

Melchizedek or Malki Tzedek (/mɛl.ˈkɪz.ə.dɪk/[1]); (Hebrew: מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶֿק malkī-ṣeḏeq) (translated as "my king (is) righteous(ness)") was a king and priest mentioned during the Abram narrative in the 14th chapter of the Book of Genesis. Spelling[edit] In the majority of Masoretic Hebrew text the name is written in as two words ("malki zedek"),[4] but in the Septuagint, New Testament, Latin Vulgate and Authorised King James Version it appears as one word.[5] Etymology[edit] The Epistle to the Hebrews,[6] along with Josephus[7] interpret the name "malki" as meaning "the king",[8] and "tzedek", meaning "righteous(ness)" or "justice".[9] This interpretation is upheld by modern scholars because in the Dead Sea Scroll 4QAmram 2.3 is found the opposite name Melchi-resha ("king of evil") for a chief angel of darkness.[10] However, it is also possible that malchi is not a possessive pronoun but genitive case.

The New Testament is only part of the complete heritage of Holy Scripture. Around 350 AD a power group has composed the New Testament from a choice of scriptures that were available at the time. This power group picked only parts of scripture that were conveying their interests. It was the time that Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire.
