Here's a selection of projects by architect Peter Zumthor, who was named 2009 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate earlier this week (see our previous story). Update: this project is included in Dezeen Book of Ideas, which is on sale now for £12. Captions are from Peter Zumthor. Above photo by Walter Mair. Above: Brother Klaus Field Chapel, 2007 Wachendorf, Eifel, Germany The field chapel dedicated to Swiss Saint Nicholas von der Flüe (1417–1487), known as Brother Klaus, was commissioned by farmer Hermann-Josef Scheidtweiler and his wife Trudel and largely constructed by them, with the help of friends, acquaintances and craftsmen on one of their fields above the village. The interior of the chapel room was formed out of 112 tree trunks, which were configured like a tent.

In the autumn of 2006, a special smouldering fire was kept burning for three weeks inside the log tent, after which time the tree trunks were dry and could easily be removed from the concrete shell. Chalk-lines are on the ground. AM radio talk-back switchboards are running hot. It's time you, as a proud citizen of Perth, took a personal stand to not give a shit. 1. There is a long proud history of entirely destroying all elements of anything interesting during the process of Perth inner-city redevelopments. The award winning Northbridge redevelopment is a small area of aesthetically terrible and cheaply constructed apartment complexes that are designed to turn-in on themselves and eschew the neighbourhood that surrounds them. Which brings us to the Waterfront. 2. 1700 apartments, in total. 3. So, you won't be able to live there. 1. End of list. No, this time it's not different. 4.

Any loud music or loud events will have restrictions due to the 1700 residents having more than a fair say. 5. 6. 7. Alex, I'll take "sterile and boring areas to avoid when you're visiting other cities for $400". 8. 9. 10. Why Architecture's Identity Problem Should Matter to the Rest of Us. These inequities, when combined with the economic downturn, are pushing greater numbers of graduates out of architecture, and the profession is weaker for it. More importantly, the public is also losing out, as the creative skills of architecture graduates are channeled into an overly bureaucratic process, rather than into solving very real societal challenges. For years, even the leaders of the high and mighty American Institute of Architects have recommended reforming and broadening the rules of becoming an architect—starting with what we call graduates. Yet year in and year out, nothing changes due to institutional resistance, protectionism, and self-preservation.

It is high time that architecture focus less on enforcement of titles and fortifying its barriers to entry, and more on creating an inclusive profession truly dedicated to the health, the safety, and the welfare of the public.
