The Semantic Web: An Introduction. This document is designed as being a simple but comprehensive introductory publication for anybody trying to get into the Semantic Web: from beginners through to long time hackers.

The Semantic Web: An Introduction

Recommended pre-reading: the Semantic Web in Breadth. Table Of Contents What Is The Semantic Web? The Semantic Web is a mesh of information linked up in such a way as to be easily processable by machines, on a global scale. You can think of it as being an efficient way of representing data on the World Wide Web, or as a globally linked database. The Semantic Web was thought up by Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the WWW, URIs, HTTP, and HTML. What's the rationale for such a system? So the Semantic Web can be seen as a huge engineering solution... but it is more than that. URI - Uniform Resource Identifier A URI is simply a Web identifier: like the strings starting with "http:" or "ftp:" that you often find on the World Wide Web. RDF - Resource Description Framework A triple can simply be described as three URIs.

< . The Semantic Web. Semantic Web. I have an idea that I think is very important but I haven’t yet polished to the point where I’m comfortable sharing it.

Semantic Web

I’m going to share it anyway, unpolished, because I think it’s that useful. So here I am, handing you a dull, gray stone, and I’m saying there’s a diamond inside. Maybe even a dilithium crystal. My hope is that a few experts will see what I see and help me safely extract it. Or maybe someone has already extracted it, and they can just show me. The problem I’m trying to solve is at the core of decentralized (or loosely-coupled) systems. RDF offers a solution to this, but it turns out to be pretty hard to put into practice.

Consider two on-the-web temperature sensors: The careful human reader will immediately wonder whether these temperatures are in Celcius or Fahrenheit, or if maybe the first is in Celcius and the second Fahrenheit. Here’s the first sketch of my solution: I know it looks ugly, but now it’s clear that both readings are in Fahrenheit. I’m not sure yet. No. C Semantic Web Activity. The Semantic Web is a web of data.

C Semantic Web Activity

There is lots of data we all use every day, and it is not part of the web. I can see my bank statements on the web, and my photographs, and I can see my appointments in a calendar. But can I see my photos in a calendar to see what I was doing when I took them? Can I see bank statement lines in a calendar? Why not? The Semantic Web is about two things. See also the activity news for an account of recent events, publications, etc. The following groups are part of the Semantic Web Activity. Active Groups Semantic Web Coordination Group The Semantic Web Coordination Group is tasked to provide a forum for managing the interrelationships and interdependencies among groups focusing on standards and technologies that relate to this goals of the Semantic Web Activity.
