Don sat with the project manager and designer, Carla Hoopes, at the Missouri Headwaters on the overlook from which Don portrayed the convergence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin rivers at the arrival of Meriweather Lewis and William Clark on July 27, 1805. Don notes that he watched the Milk River throughout the course of his life braid a path back and forth across the landscape. Don's insights prompted him to visualize the Missouri Headwaters at a point in time after the braiding up to 1805--not where the river flows today.
